Description

Nemesia 'Mello Red & White', also known as Nemesia, Fairy Mirror or Cape Jewel, is an annual that is a bit whimsical but so picturesque. It has a deep red upper lip and a pure white lower lip.

The leaves are lanceolate and weakly toothed. The plant is very bushy and branching and produces stems that support a myriad of small flowers born at the leaf axils, in loose clusters that resemble the shape of certain orchids. This variety reaches a height of 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in) when it is happy and will flower continuously from June to October.

The flowers of the 'Mello Red & White' nemesia are two-lipped, with four protruding petals forming the upper lip, resembling a scarlet hat. The lower lip is composed of two swollen, pure white petals. This creates a stark contrast with the dark green foliage. This flower, with its picturesque and exotic beauty, will show off all its splendour in borders, rockeries or containers.

It prefers well-drained, rich soils. You can plant it in full sun or partial shade. Reserve a spot for it near walkways, on the patio or terrace, in borders or anywhere you can enjoy its magnificent form. It looks sublime paired with Dorotheanthe difformis, with whom it shares its origins and immense ground-covering qualities.

Attention, these seeds are reserved for experienced gardeners who are used to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow nemesia seeds thiny from March to May on the surface of well-worked and loosened soil. Water regularly to maintain some moisture, especially during dry periods. You can also sow in pots or trays filled with moist special seed compost, covering the seeds with a very fine pinch of compost or vermiculite. Keep them between 20 and 25 °C (68 and 77°F). Light promotes germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 7 to 14 days. Transplant the young plants into 7.5 cm (3in) pots or trays and plant outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.
