Description

The Lantana camara Mixed Hybrids selection gathers different flowering and generous lantanas. They have a long flowering period, with a variety of bicoloured umbels whose shades change as they bloom, in red and yellow, pink and yellow, or lilac and white. Planted in large pots, they provide a colourful decoration from summer to autumn. These small round, tender shrubs are undemanding regarding soil type, and resistant to drought and sea salt. However, they need full sun to flourish.

Originally from tropical regions of Central America, South America, and Africa, the Lantana camara, also known as Lantana, Thousand Flowers, or Gold Basket, has two faces. This woody shrub from the Verbenaceae family is despised in hot and humid tropical regions, where it invades everything, and adored by horticulturists in temperate regions. The 'Mixed Hybrids' mix gathers a beautiful range of colourful and original plants.
It is a bushy, round or spreading shrub, with multiple upright, quadrangular, and spiny stems. Its foliage is evergreen in mild climates and in greenhouses and is composed of dark green, dentate, and slightly wrinkled leaves, truncate at the base and narrower at the top. Their fabulous flowering starts at the end of spring. The small tubular flowers form a myriad of round and colourful clusters grouped in large umbels. Regardless of the dominant colour, the flower opens light and then darkens, forming a multicoloured cluster.

In mild climates, Lantana Camara Mixed Hybrids can be planted in the ground and stay there all year round, as they will tolerate light frosts. Elsewhere it should be grown in large pots or containers. These plants happily blend with blue flowers, such as Peruvian heliotropes or Plumbago capensis. It can be used as an annual when planted in a flower bed. It can be associated with cleomes, agapanthus, or gauras in dry situations.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Lantana seeds are quite slow to germinate and need soaking for 24 hours in lukewarm water before sowing.

Sow lantanas from February to July in trays, pots, etc. filled with good soil, at a depth of 3 mm (0in). Place in a propagator or a warm place to maintain an optimal temperature of 20-25°C (68-77°F).

Transplant the seedlings as soon as they are manageable into 8 cm (3in) pots. Then into 13 cm (5in) pots and finally into 20 cm (8in) diameter pots. Water moderately and provide a temperature of 7-13°C (44.6-55.4°F) during winter.

Cultivation:

Lantana needs a sunny position all year round. While it tolerates heat well in the summer, it needs to be cool in the winter. It is frost-sensitive and needs to be protected from frost during the winter period; a bright cold greenhouse or a conservatory would be suitable. Prune to reshape and thicken it in March. As soon as the temperatures start to warm up, gradually acclimatise it to the outdoors and full sun.

Often trained as a standard, lantana camara is an ideal ornamental plant for terraces and balconies. During the summer, remove faded flowers as they appear. In October, bring it indoors or discard it if you grow it as an annual.

Lantana is known for its drought resistance in summer, however, it requires regular watering to support flowering when grown in pots, more frequently in summer than in winter.
