Description

Hedychium, also known as Kahili Ginger or Ginger Lily, is a remarkable exotic perennial. It has lush, bright green foliage and beautiful, fragrant flower spikes in late summer in a wide range of tropical colours. It is easy to grow and hardy in milder climates.

Hedychium gardnerianum belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and is Native to India and the Himalayas. It is a rhizomatous perennial which grows to a height of 1.20-1.80 m. It forms majestic clumps, producing very large, fragrant flower spikes in late summer. This collection features a wide range of warm colours, from white to yellow, orange and red.

Kahili ginger is easy to grow in moist, warm conditions, in deep, humus-rich soil. Although it is not very cold hardy, it can be grown outdoors in milder climates providing the foliage is cut back in late autumn and clumps are protected under a thick layer of mulch. In harsher climates, they can be treated like Canna Lillies by digging up the clumps and storing them in a frost-free place over winter. Kahili Giner has a wonderful exotic appearance. It looks fantastic grown in pots or in the garden alongside Gunneras, Canna Lillies or a tree fern.

Planting and care

Sow as soon as you receive the seeds in pots or seed trays filled with good quality sowing. Cover the seeds with a very fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Make sure that the soil is moist but not waterlogged, and keep a temperature of 20-25°C. Ideally, place in a propagator in a light place to encourage germination. Germination can be quite slow, generally taking 21 to 60 days.

Once the young plants are strong enough to be handled, transplant them into bigger pots. Harden them off for 10 to 15 days before planting. When all risk of frost is over, plant them out in humus-rich, well-drained soil (or a large container, minimum 60 cm in diameter). Leave 60 cm between each plant. The plants will flower during their second year.
