Description

The 'Rosebud Orange' California Poppy, known by its Latin name Eschscholzia californica, is a hardy annual plant that is very easy to grow. Its crumpled, double to semi-double orange flowers resemble the buds of certain English roses and bloom abundantly from June to September.

The California Poppy gets its common name from the resemblance of its fully bloomed flowers to those of its cousins, Poppies and Corn Poppies, as well as its origin in the American West.
Its melliferous flowers attract bees and hoverflies to your garden, providing an undeniable ecological benefit. This California Poppy has graceful, slightly crumpled "paper flowers" that enhance the colour of flower beds.

Picking its flowers will allow you to create beautiful, short-lived bouquets in vibrant colours.

Due to its small size (30 cm (12in) tall by 25 cm (10in) wide), the California Poppy is typically used at the front of flower beds, in rock gardens, or pots on the terrace. It readily self-seeds and forms lovely, naturally-looking flower beds year after year.

It tolerates all types of soil, even dry and poor soils, but prefers lighter soils over heavy ones. Full sun exposure will promote its flowering.

Planting and care

Sow Californian poppy from March to May, directly in place in rows spaced 15cm (6in) apart. Cover the seeds with 1cm (0in) of fine soil and water regularly. The seeds will germinate between 5 to 10 days. When the young plants are strong enough, you can thin out your sowing by transplanting some seedlings 15cm (6in) apart. Repeat your sowings every 15 days from March to May to ensure a regular and abundant flowering from June to September. By sowing under cover in February at 15-20°C (59-68°F), you can obtain young plants ready to be transplanted after the frost and have the first flowering as early as May.
