Description
Mimulus Medius F1 Yellow Bicolour combines everything we love about monkey flowers: compact growth, rapid flowering and, above all, large, striking bicoloured flowers. This very uniform F1 variety forms low, well-branched clumps, very decorative in pots, window boxes, damp borders or at the front of shaded beds. In damp, humus-rich soil, it proves generous throughout the season.
Mimulus Medius F1 Yellow Bicolour belongs to the Phrymaceae family and the horticultural group of Mimulus × hybridus (syn. Erythranthe × hybrida). These hybrids descend from species of damp habitats, notably Erythranthe lutea and E. cuprea, native to Chile and western Argentina. In theory, a short-lived perennial here grown as an annual. Its common name is monkey flower or monkey musk.
The Medius F1 series has been selected for its low, highly branched habit and early flowering. Yellow Bicolour forms a rounded, dense clump, 20 to 25cm in height and spread. The stems branch from the base. The oval to slightly oblong, finely toothed, medium green leaves make up dense foliage that covers the ground. The flowers, typical of monkey flowers, have a tubular base and open into a two-lipped corolla (two upper lobes, three lower ones). In Medius F1 Yellow Bicolour, they reach around 5cm in diameter, a remarkable size for such a low-growing plant. The flower is bright yellow, enhanced by a large red to carmine eye, dotted with small darker spots towards the throat. Flowering extends from June to September, sometimes until the first frosts if faded flowers are regularly removed.
The name Mimulus comes from the Latin "mimus", the mime, in reference to the little "face" in the corollas, the origin of the nickname monkey flower.
In a small garden, Mimulus Medius F1 Yellow Bicolour is ideal for bringing life to slightly cool, shaded areas: terraces and balconies, east- or north-facing window boxes, damp path borders. It can be planted en masse at the front of a bed, at the foot of shrubs, or near a water feature. Its yellow and red colouring pairs well with dark or variegated foliage. In a window box, you can pair it with the Begonia boliviensis 'Summerwings Apricot', New Guinea Impatiens Divine Orange Bronze Leaf and Coleus 'Pinto Mix' for its foliage splashed with lime green, pink and purple. To stay on the monkey flower theme, add a few clumps of Mimulus x Hybridus 'Maximus Mixed', a giant variety offered in a wide range of colours: together they make a very vibrant, large pot display, flowering all summer long.

Planting and care
Sow Mimulus Medius F1 Yellow Bicolour in seed trays from March to May on the surface of good-quality seed compost. Keep the substrate moist without overwatering at room temperature between 20 and 30°C. Do not exclude light, as it plays a part in the germination process. You will need to wait 10 to 21 days before the young shoots appear.
Gradually acclimatise your seedlings to cooler temperatures. Once they are strong enough to handle and all risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors into humus-bearing, well-worked soil, taking care to space each young plant 20-25cm apart. Deadheading faded flowers encourages repeat flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
