Description

Plumed Cockscomb 'Flamma Pink' is an annual variety selected for its bright pink plumes and abundant summer flowering. The seeds produce compact, well-branched plants within a few weeks, to decorate sunny borders, edging and containers. Very tolerant of heat and humidity, this selection offers spikes that remain upright, do not mind the rain and retain a vivid colour. It is also a good choice for cut flower arrangements and dried flowers, as its inflorescences last a long time, both in the garden and in a vase.

'Flamma Pink' descends from the species Celosia argentea, of the Plumosa group, in the Amaranthaceae family. It is a recent cultivar bred by Clover Seed and distributed within the Flamma series, which includes several colours (pink, red, orange, golden, etc.). This series is characterised by a semi-dwarf habit, very early branching, uniform flowering from sowing and excellent heat tolerance. Flamma Pink is a non-hybrid variety, awarded the Fleuroselect quality mark and an All-America Selections award in 2025 for its outstanding performance and long-lasting flowering. It differs from the type species in its more compact size, earlier flowering, regularity of its clumps and the stability of its bright pink colour.
Each plant forms a small upright bush of 35 to 40cm in height and 30 to 40cm in spread within one season. The stems, which are not brittle, bear medium green to bright green, lanceolate, 5 to 10cm long leaves arranged alternately. At the tips of the numerous stems, feathery, narrow and pyramidal spikes develop, 5 to 8cm tall. They are composed of a multitude of very small, tightly packed flowers, surrounded by fine, silky bracts that give them a feather-duster appearance. Their colour is a bright, warm pink, which does not fade in the sun. Flowering begins 10 to 12 weeks after sowing and extends from June to October. The inflorescences remain decorative for a long time, even when dried.

Cockscomb 'Flamma Pink' with its bright pink plumes will stand out in summer borders, flower beds and large containers. Plant it in small groups of 3 to 5 specimens at the front of a border or along the vegetable patch, where it makes a lovely link between flowers and vegetables. It pairs particularly well with the apricot tones of Cosmos 'Apricotta' and 'Apricot Lemonade'. In a dedicated cut flower corner, pair it with Zinnia elegans 'Queen Red Lime' and the long tawny panicles of Amaranthus cruentus 'Hot Biscuits'.

Planting and care

Sow the Flamma Pink Celosia from February to April in a seed tray. Use a good quality potting compost. Scatter your seeds freely over the surface. Cover the seeds with a dusting of potting compost or vermiculite, firm down lightly and water copiously with a fine spray. Place your seed tray in a light position, out of direct sunlight, at a temperature of 24°C to 27°C.

Seed germination will take 14 to 21 days. As soon as the young plants have reached a height of 5cm, transplant them into pots. 15 days before their final planting out, begin to acclimatise them gradually until they reach a temperature of 15°C.

From the end of May to the beginning of June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant out your young plants. Choose a spot in full sun. Add a good trowel of composted manure to each planting hole. Avoid planting in lime-bearing soils. Space your plants 25cm apart. Water and mulch if necessary.
