Description

The Blonde Swiss Chard with White Stems is a biennial vegetable plant, measuring 30 to 50 cm (12 to 20in), cultivated for its smooth, light green leaves and its wide, non-stringy stems that are consumed cooked. Very productive, tasty, and resistant to heat. Spring sowing. Harvest in late summer, autumn.

Swiss Chard gets its name from a popular soup, consumed during the Middle Ages and of which it was the main ingredient. It is also known by many other names: Chard, Swiss Chard with Stems.

Swiss Chard leaves are delicious in pies, soups, or cooked like spinach. The stems can be prepared in a gratin with bechamel sauce or steamed. Although low in calories and rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals, Swiss Chard should be consumed in moderation for people suffering from arthritis and rheumatism, as it contains oxalates.

Harvest: Leaves and stems are harvested as needed by selecting the largest ones.

Storage: Can be stored for a few days in a cool place after harvesting.

Handy Gardening Tip: Regular hoeing and weeding are recommended, and mulching is advised in case of drought.

Planting and care

Sowing

from March to June

In a previously amended soil (rich but without fresh manure) and prepared very finely with a rake.

Directly in place, as transplanting sometimes causes premature seeding.

Either in a small hole with 3 seeds every 40 cm (16in) covered with a small layer of fine soil. Then regular watering until germination. Keep the most beautiful plant at the stage of 3-4 leaves.

Or in a shallow furrow, in rows spaced 40 cm (16in) apart covered with a small layer of fine soil. Then regular watering until germination. At the stage of 3-4 leaves, thin out to leave only one plant every 40 cm (16in).

Maintenance

Perform regular hoeing and weeding.

Watering should be abundant and frequent.

Swiss chards can, in certain climates (above -6°C), overwinter in the ground by taking care to generously mulch them.
