Thanks to the individuals for order preparation and shipping, the 3 bulbs received appear to be healthy. Planted near pink rose bushes, I am now patiently awaiting their growth... (or not?).

Description

Lilium 'Beijing Moon' is a beautiful hybrid of trumpet lily and oriental lily. Its voluptuous trumpet-shaped flowers reach a diameter of 22 cm (9in), with a captivating colour. Against a white and satin background, the inside of the petals is infused with mauve along the edges, and filled with golden yellow at the throat, while the outside is pale mauve streaked with aubergine. Not only are they beautiful, but they also have an intoxicating and heady fragrance. This is an easy-to-grow, tall and reliable, floriferous plant, perfect in borders, containers or even large rockeries. Its flowers are irreplaceable in bouquets.

The genus Lilium belongs to the lily family; its representatives are bulbous plants with deciduous foliage, with a narrow and upright habit from spring. 'Beijing Moon' is a hybrid that will reach 1.2 m (4ft) high when flowering, and the clump will spread indefinitely over time, with the bulbs producing bulblets through vegetative multiplication. In August, umbels appear with 3 to 5 trumpet-shaped flowers inclined towards the ground, over 20 cm (8in) in diameter. They bear thick and waxy petals, with slightly wavy edges, in an original and refined combinationenhanced by stamens with reddish-brown anthers. These magnificent flowers exhale a sumptuous fragrance. The green stems marbled with brown are very strong, almost unbreakable. The dark green, shiny, lanceolate leaves are deciduous.

This lily will thrive in light soil and tolerate ordinary soil but hates poorly drained and heavy ones. You can grow it with bushy perennial plants such as perennial geraniums, coreopsis or phlox, as trumpet lilies like having their base in the shade and the other plants will help prevent the stems from bending in the wind. They are perfect companions for roses. Lilies are ideal for borders, and of course in bouquets. As mature garden plants, they add a sophisticated touch to any composition. Place a few pots of lilies near entrances and passageways and their fragrance and beauty will delight all your senses.

Planting and care

The 'Beijing Moon' lily does not like soils that are too chalky, poorly drained, and heavy. Plant it in full sun, with the base in the shade, preferably in spring, with the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a layer of sand that will prevent rot and attacks from slugs, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April. Stake the stems when they reach 30 cm (12in) high. If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually but be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched.
After flowering, it is a good idea to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the flower bed beautiful during summer.

Tips for planting lilies in compact soil: The scaly bulbs of large lilies are sensitive to clay soils that suffocate them and cause rot. In Eastern Europe, the following technique is used to help these bulbs survive the winter. Plant them on 'benches' built above ground level. These benches are made of a layer of gravel, on which tightly packed branches are placed. Then cover everything with a thick layer of compost, 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) deep. Plant the bulbs in the compost, on which a few ground-covering plants can also be allowed to grow.

On the terrace, you can create sumptuous pots with lilies. Choose a container that is large and deep enough (at least 16 cm (6in) in diameter for 1 bulb). Fill it with a mixture of leaf compost and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs, 10-15 cm (4-6in) apart, then water abundantly. Place the pots in a cool room, or outside once the frost has passed. The ambient temperature should be around 12°C (53.6°F). When the shoots appear, move the pot to a conservatory, or a very bright room, at a temperature of around 18°C (64.4°F). Apply liquid fertiliser twice a month until the flower buds appear.
