Description

Dahlia 'Mount Tacoma' is a pure white dahlia with large "cactus" flowers bristling with pointed petals. It charms with its graphic form and luminosity, both in borders and in vases. The plant is vigorous and flowers for over four months, right into autumn. A top-class variety for wedding cut flower arrangements!

Dahlia is a genus belonging to the Asteraceae family, native to the mountains of Mexico and Central America, now cultivated as a tuberous plant for summer flowering. The 'Mount Tacoma' variety is cultivated from tubers; it is a non-hardy perennial plant in our climate. It is classified in the "Cactus and Semi‑cactus" group, characterised by flowers with long, narrow petals that are more or less recurved and/or tubular. Its flower measures 15 to 18 cm in diameter. Its height varies from 1 m to 1.20 m depending on growing conditions. Flowering spreads from July to October. The foliage is green, the stems are sturdy and capable of supporting the flowers. At the end of the season, the vegetation turns black; this is the time to overwinter the tubers in a dry, frost-free place.

If you take care to deadhead spent flowers, you will benefit from a prolonged flowering period. Create large cut flower arrangements by combining various dahlia varieties with diverse forms and colours. The large, bristly white flowers of Dahlia 'Mount Tacoma' pair well with the decorative foliage of the Oriental Ostrich Fern and eucalyptus. To accentuate its whiteness, choose, for example, Coneflower ‘Green Twister’ or Ammi majus ‘Queen of Africa’.

A star plant for borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias confidently accompany the most beautiful flowers, but are also appreciated alongside vegetable plants. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. However, its poor culinary qualities assigned it to the rank of ornamental plant, much to the delight of gardeners.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Mount Tacoma' is easy to grow in all regions. For generous flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubercles in full sun after the last frosts; rich, cool, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would encourage tubercle rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to fill in without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, water thoroughly once and then repeat this watering regularly for the first 6 weeks to aid rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold and need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage; this is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so the tubercles can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them frost-free in a dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In southern regions, near the coast, experiencing only a few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the soil with a carpet of leaves or straw as protection.

Tall Dahlias, with hollow stems, do not withstand wind or heavy rain well. To overcome this drawback, you can stake them, but, you must agree, it is not very aesthetic. On the other hand, by pinching the stems early or removing the axial flower buds, you will spread the habit of the plant, which will offer more resistance to bad weather. At the same time, you thus channel the influx of sap onto a single flower, which will become larger and stronger.
