Description of Tulipa Striped Crown

The Tulip 'Striped Crown' is an original variety recognisable by its slender crown-shaped flowers with tapered and recurved petals, marked by flamboyant rosy-red stripes on a cream to pale yellow background. In late spring, this graphic tulip brings a contemporary dimension to borders and flower beds, and also shines brightly in pots or cut flower arrangements. To ensure generous flowering, avoid heavy, wet soil in winter, which will encourage bulb rot.

The Tulip 'Striped Crown' is a plant from the Liliaceae family and belongs to the Coronet tulip group, a recent horticultural division introduced in 2018, characterised by crown-shaped flowers with rigid, slightly undulate tepals. This cultivar grows on sturdy stems approximately 30 to 50 cm tall, bears lanceolate grey-green foliage and produces flowers with thick, leathery bases in April-May, forming a true crown-like structure. Mesuring 6 to 8 cm in diameter, each flower exhibits a variable palette ranging from cream or pale yellow to deep red, with irregular stripes and spots that intensify as the flowering progresses. Like its counterparts, it is deciduous, with the foliage naturally drying out after flowering. This cultivar evokes the famous 17th-century tulip 'tulip mania', reproducing virus-free the striated patterns of broken tulips, making it a modern sample of this rich horticultural heritage.

In a garden where every bloom tells a story, the Tulip 'Striped Crown' traces its delicately striped flames like fine inks on a light parchment. Planted en masse in a structured border, it catches the eye without dominating, especially when emerging from a carpet of mauve pansies or bluish forget-me-nots. In a pot, it stands as a solitary jewel or converses with the soft green sobriety of spring euphorbias. Its sculptural allure pairs with the classic grace of the Tulip 'Calgary', the bicolour charm of the Tulip 'Flaming Flag', or the red and gold flashes of the Tulipa 'Gavota', to crate a refined display.

Planting of Tulipa Striped Crown

Plant the Tulip Striped Crown bulbs in autumn, from September to December at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart. Planting should be done in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly calcareous, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in soil that is dry to cool in summer. Place it in a good, sunny position or in partial shade. Once flowering is over, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
