Colour not consistent with the photos: the one that comes closest is the 3rd photo. BUT, it is very unique as it is red and yellow with very distinct vertical lines of colour. The term "RASTA" is very fitting, with green representing the stem, which is not very tall. A very beautiful variety of "parrot" tulip." Description

Tulipa 'Rasta Parrot' is a unique tulip that will add beauty to your garden. Red, yellow, orange, pink, green, and purple come together in an unlikely combination for a warm and colourful spring festival. This Parrot Group tulip features large, shimmering flowers with a ruffled 'plumage' that catches everyone's attention and adds colour to your garden. When fully open, the almost flat petals reveal a yellow-orange throat. Its short but sturdy stems withstand the weather well. This simply amazing tulip deserves a prominent place in a flower bed or in a beautiful pot on a patio. Its cut flowers are ideal for creating voluptuous and fantastic bouquets, in the style of Flemish masters.

Tulipa 'Rasta Parrot' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was introduced in 2016. It is currently classified in the Parrot Group of tulips, whose main characteristic is the presentation of enormous flowers with twisted, puffy, ruffled, and irregularly fringed petals. 'Rasta Parrot' is obtained through mutation (the sudden appearance of new characteristics that persist in subsequent generations). It is a compact plant, reaching 40cm (16in) tall when in flower. Its flowers bloom at the top of the stems, above the broadly lanceolate leaves. These stunning flowers, with a minimum diameter of 15cm (6in), are all different. Starting as purple-flamed green buds, they evolve into much warmer tones as they open, revealing a red, yellow, and orange heart. Flowering takes place in late April or early May, towards the end of the tulip season.

Parrot Group tulips are renowned for their rich colours, stunning and variegated flowers, and suitability in flower beds and bouquets. In the 18th century, they were considered monstrous. This group developed a lot in the 1930s, when it was discovered that irradiating bulbs with X-rays caused this mutation. They are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. This tulip beautifully decorates balconies and patios. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant extra bulbs for bouquets, as they make superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Plant your tulips as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant them at a depth of 15cm (6in) (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. Cut the flower stalks after flowering and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves.
