Description

The 'Ballade Gold' water lily tulip produces large, tapered flowers in a bright yellow colour that open gracefully. The elegance of their shape and the luminosity of their colour do not go unnoticed in flower beds, as well as in vases. Rather late and truly dignified, it will bring the tulip season to a beautiful close. Place it among white or blue flowers.

The 'Ballade Gold' water lily tulip, introduced to the market in 1997, belongs to the Lily family. It is classified in division 6 of horticultural tulips, which includes 15 varieties. The main characteristics of the water lily tulips are as follows: single flowers that bloom in the second half of spring, with narrow cup-shaped petals that are pointed and curved when they open, forming a star shape when fully open. During the day, these flowers become spider-like and widely open. They were created at the beginning of the 20th century. In tulips, the petals (corolla) and sepals (calyx) have the same shape, which is why the term "tepals" is used to refer to both. The 'Ballade Gold' tulip reaches a height of 50-55 cm (20-22in) when in bloom, and it flowers between late April and mid-May. Its foliage is thinner than that of other tulips. Each solitary flower is supported by a delicate-looking stem that is nevertheless resistant to bad weather. It is a spontaneous mutation of the variety 'Ballade'.

You can create beautiful scenes by planting this 'Ballade Gold' tulip in masses among other perennials that will hide its absence in summer: heucheras, alchemillas, perennial geraniums, 'Mainacht' wood sage, 'Lyrical Blues' meadow sage. Its brilliance allows for associations with white tulips that create a truly luminous harmony. This also maximises the duration of flowering in flower beds. Combine it with hellebores and euphorbias for surprising scenes. Finally, don't forget that you can also use them in beautiful planters, as well as in bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Ballade Gold' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once the flowering is over, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
