Description

Tulipa 'Für Elise' is a lovely dwarf variety that enchants the front of flower beds in early spring. It displays beautiful soft and bright shades, between pale-pink and yellow. Its flesh tones blend perfectly with its bluish-green foliage with fine purple stripes. Its small size is ideal for squeezing into rockeries. It also works well in containers.

Tulipa greigii belong to the Liliaceae family. They have attractive characteristics. They reach about 20cm (8in). They work well along the edge of pathways and in rockeries with other early bulbs. 'Für Elise' will also thrive in pots or balcony planters to brighten windowsills and patios in spring compositions. They are more perennial than horticultural tulips. Originating from central Asia, they are hardy and robust, and are adapted to many climates. They appreciate rather well-drained soil and can tolerate a less rich substrate.

'Für Elise' has beautiful oblong green leaves measuring 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) long. They are wide, thick, and sheathing. Their bluish hue is often marbled with dark red streaks. From March, beautiful corollas unfold in a range of light and tender shades. Perched on a sturdy stem, the cup is formed by petals ending in a point. The base colour is a pale-yellow. Depending on the maturity of the flower, it takes on light pink nuances and displays peach and light-salmon tones. This entire palette is changeable and particularly rare in the range of botanical tulips.

Paired with small bulbs in vibrant colours, Tulipa greigii 'Für Elise' is a feast for the eyes at the end of winter. Easy, sturdy, and low-maintenance, it reappears vigorously every year and creates a staggered flowering with crocuses, muscaris, and daffodils in refined and delicate compositions.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, spacing them 5 to 10cm (2 to 4in) apart, at a depth of 10cm (4in) (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). You can plant them in the ground or in a container. They will also appreciate a rock garden in a non-scorching exposure.

Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Also, avoid bulbs touching each other. Tulipa greigii will thrive in moist to dry soil in a sunny or even partially shaded location.

After flowering, their faded foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heucheras, tiarellas, or brunneras in the foreground of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowing leaves. To prevent the bulb from depleting its energy, it is wise to remove the faded flower stems.
