Description

The late single Tulip Kingsblood is a stunning red variety that carries a beautiful flower 60 cm (24in) above the ground. The flower has a classic shape, and is vibrant cherry red with scarlet edges, sublime as a cut flower and in large beds. It blooms at the end of the tulip season, in May. Late single tulips are often underestimated, but they perfectly complement perennials with their pure colours. 'Kingsblood' pairs particularly well with red or white peony flowers. It also forms beautiful combinations with violet or 'black' flowered tulips.

The 'Kingsblood' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally cultivated and introduced to the horticultural market in 1952 and is part of the so-called historical tulips grown at the Hortus Bulborum in the Netherlands. It is classified in Division 5, the late single tulips, which are known for flowering at the end of the season. When in bloom, it can reach a height of up to 60 cm (24in). Perched on strong stems, well above the broadly lanceolate, slightly greyish leaves, the large flowers are elongated, elegant, and of a superb red enhanced by the satiny texture of the petals. It flowers in May - June, making it useful in the garden to accompany the first summer blooms.

The late single Tulip Kingsblood has a unique charm in the garden and adds a touch of class to spring bouquets. It is perfect for large beds, alongside perennials such as peonies, garden irises, or pastel-toned wallflowers. Late tulips allow you to maximize the flowering period. This tulip is ideal for creating elegant bouquets, alongside peonies, lilac clusters, or campanulate flowers. When you put them in a vase, a shallow amount of water is sufficient! Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Kingsblood will grow well in deep soil, moist to dry in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is over, it is a good idea to remove the seed heads to prevent the plant from being exhausted.
