Description

The Triumph Tulip 'Jimmy' is an old variety, but still popular for the colour of its flowers in shades of orange and pink. Its large flowers of classic shape are carried by a very sturdy stem. This variety, healthy and long-lasting, flowers in the middle of the tulip season, in April, or early May, depending on the climate.

The 'Jimmy' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 1962, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, the main characteristic of which is to have narrow cup-shaped flowers. Perched on thick stems, 40-45 cm (16-18in) tall, well above the widely lanceolate green-blue leaves, its cup-shaped corollas, ovoid, 10 cm (4in) in diameter appear. They show six "petals" (more precisely tepals) of thick and slightly silky substance, brushed with orange and pink on the shoulders. The colour of the flowers forms a beautiful association with the bluish tone of the foliage. The latter yellows and dries some time after flowering, while the bulb enters a resting phase.

The Triumph Tulip 'Jimmy' finds its place in large flower beds or large borders. Its sunset colours allow beautiful associations with tulips in white, yellow, blue, and purple tones. Its flowering will be enhanced by light flowers, such as Forget-me-nots, Grape Hyacinths, Squills, and Hyacinths. Pair it with white daffodils, lady's mantle, or even hellebores and spurge, and you will get surprising scenes. It perfectly accompanies large perennials, and it is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. In a vase, use very little water, just a little at the bottom is enough! Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Jimmy' tulip bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a good exposure, sunny or partially shady. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
