More information

The double flower of this Tulip blooms in a large, open and well-formed cup, then opens up like a peony. It displays a fabulous colour, a bright orange striated with purple and subtly flamed with green. With a short stem, this variety flowers after the early single tulips, in April. This flowering lasts a long time in the garden, in pots, and also in vases. Prodigious!

Description

The 'Hermitage' Double Early Tulip is a flamboyant variety. Its mandarin orange flower, streaked with purple and a hint of green on the outside, and the way it blooms like a peony with multiple petals, is enchanting. It sits atop a short stem that is resilient to inclement weather and emerges from broad, bluish foliage. Its flowering follows that of early single tulips.

The 'Hermitage double' Tulip, introduced in 2006, belongs to the Lily family. Originally horticultural in origin, it is now classified in the group of double early tulips, known for their double flowers that bloom at the same height. Varieties in this category are favored by enthusiasts of well-arranged flower beds. They are often offered in a mix of colours under the name 'Murillo' tulips. Perched on sturdy stems measuring 30-35cm (12-14in), just above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the fully open double flowers, measuring 12cm (5in) wide, almost lie flat. The flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season. The foliage, consisting of beautiful lanceolate leaves with a glaucous green colour, yellows and dries up a few weeks after flowering, as the bulb enters its resting phase.

With their rich range of colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for mass plantings and bouquet arrangements, the reputation of double early tulips with peony-like flowers is well established. They are among the most popular varieties for cut flowers. Unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period of tulips when designing your flower beds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few extra bulbs for cutting, as they make stunning long-lasting cut flowers. 'Hermitage double', with its flamboyant colour, pairs beautifully with 'Orca', 'Brownie', as well as with the blue flowers of Muscari or wood hyacinths.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shaded location. After flowering, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
