Our Selection of Bluebells. These spring bulbs carpet woodland floors where they naturalise easily. The most well-known, Hyacinthoides non-scripta (native bluebell in Western Europe), forms drooping blue clusters 20-35 cm tall in April-May. Hyacinthoides hispanica, nicknamed the Spanish bluebell, offers more open and upright bell-shaped flowers in blue, white, or pink, on a sturdier stem (25-40 cm). You can also find white and pink forms of the native species, and selections of hispanica like ‘Excelsior’, perfect for creating colourful carpets in partial shade. These hardy bulbs provide nectar-rich spring flowering, beneficial to pollinators, and establish themselves permanently in humus-bearing soil.

Blubells prefer damp to moist soils in spring, rich in humus but well-drained in winter, under the light shade of leafy trees or in non-scorching sun. H. non-scripta is well-suited for naturalising along woodland edges and at the base of deciduous bushes; avoid collecting them from the wild and isolate them if you're concerned about hybridisation with H. hispanica, which is more vigorous.

You'll adore them!
