Description

Narcissus New Baby is a bicoloured, dwarf, floriferous variety.

Each bulb bears one or two inflorescences, each producing between 3 and 5 flowers. The original flowers are white, striped with yellow and have a small pale yellow crown. They are late-blooming, from mid-April to May.

Ideal in rockeries, borders or containers, New Baby Narcissus is a very hardy variety which tolerates full sun and partial shade. It prefers rich and well-drained soil but also thrives in heavy soil.

Narcissus bulbs come back every year. Unlike perennial plants, it is unnecessary to feed before flowering. Only cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at this time, this is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares the flowers for the following year.

Planting and care

Narcissi bloom from February to May and come back every year. They are easy to grow and will thrive both in the shade of a wood and a sunny flower bed. Plant them 10 cm (4in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart, in sets of at least 5 bulbs, in uniform or mixed colours. To plant them in a lawn: lift a patch of turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm (8in) (the length of a spade), place your bulbs, cover them with soil and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow early, as you must let narcissus leaves wither before cutting them. This is when the bulb regenerates and prepares the flowers for the following year. However, remove the flowers as soon as they have faded to prevent seed formation which would unnecessarily deplete the bulb.
