Description

Rhododendron impeditum 'Select' forms a small evergreen cushion, perfect for rock gardens in slight shade, the foreground of acid soil borders and containers. Its dense and regular habit showcases numerous small mauve and violet flowers in spring. It makes a long-lasting specimen, decorative and compact in an alpine garden. Grow in partial shade, in acid, humus-rich, moist soil that is very well-drained.

A botanical species of the Ericaceae family, Rhododendron impeditum belongs to the subsection Lapponica. Its natural range covers northwest Yunnan and southwest Sichuan (China), where it grows on subalpine slopes between 2,500 and 4,600 m altitude. The specific epithet impeditum (from Latin 'hindered, stunted') refers to its very low and compact habit. 'Select' denotes a horticultural selection of the species, chosen for its compactness and floriferousness.

This small shrub is dense; it slowly forms a very branched dome. In open ground, it generally reaches 50–60 cm in height and spread at maturity; at 10 years, it will show 25–30 cm in height for 30 cm in spread, and slightly less in a pot. The ovate to elliptical leaves measure 0.5 to 1.4 cm long and 0.3 to 0.6 cm wide. They are dark green with blue-green highlights, sometimes slightly aromatic when crushed; they remain evergreen in winter.
Flowering occurs from April to May in the form of funnel-shaped corollas, grouped in small umbels, in mauve shades. The fruits are small dry capsules that release tiny seeds in late summer-autumn. The root system is shallow, very fine and fibrous: it requires an acid soil (pH ~4.5–6), humus-rich, moist but well-drained, and dislikes stagnant water as much as lime. The plant does not produce suckers; it can, however, spread slightly by natural layering of branches in contact with the soil. This variety is hardy down to around −20 °C, even −25 °C in very well-drained soil and in a site sheltered from cold winds.

Place Rhododendron impeditum 'Select' at the edge of woodland, in a non-calcareous rock garden or in a deep container, sheltered from drying winds and scorching afternoon sun. Combine it with other small acid-loving shrubs of fine texture and moderate growth: Pieris japonica 'Débutante', Japanese azalea ‘Koromo Shikibu' for a flowery spring; add a dwarf conifer such as Pinus mugo 'Mops' and a groundcover composed of different snow heathers.

Planting and care

Plant Rhododendron impeditum 'Select' in a non-scorching sunny position or in partial shade, sheltered from cold, drying winds, in moist, humus-bearing, light soil with an acidic tendency. Like all ericaceous plants, it does not tolerate chalky and dry soils, nor heavy soils that are waterlogged in winter. Dig a hole three times the volume of the pot. Soak the root ball in (lime-free) water and plant the shrub at collar level, in a mix composed of 1/4 peat, leaf mould, gravel or pozzolana, and loam. Water abundantly and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Consequently, they dislike long dry spells. Therefore, a soil enriched with humus and abundant watering during dry periods is recommended. Moreover, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pozzolana, clay pebbles) at planting. Place a mulch of shredded pine bark at the base of the shrub every spring to keep the soil moist while maintaining an acidic pH. Maintenance simply involves cutting off faded flowers in summer and removing dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by vine weevils, which eat the edges of leaves and the rootlets, as well as by the famous 'rhododendron lace bug', which often does not cause severe damage. Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendron indicates poor iron assimilation in the soil and causes premature death of the plant. Although lime is usually the cause, poorly drained soil or a deeply planted root ball can also explain the phenomenon.
