Description
Hydrangea paniculata 'Silver Dollar' is a compact hydrangea, prized for its dense panicles and good resistance to rain. Initially creamy white, its flowers gradually turn pale pink towards the end of the season. Its moderate size allows you to enjoy generous flowering in a small garden or on a terrace. This reliable variety has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society for its qualities and performance in the garden.
Hydrangea paniculata belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. The botanical species originates from East Asia, from China and Korea to Japan and Sakhalin Island. 'Silver Dollar' was selected by Dutch nurseryman Peter Zwijnenburg, in Boskoop, and introduced in 1990. The shrub forms a dense, rounded bush 1.20 to 1.50 m in height and with a similar spread. Its upright, sturdy stems, more or less tinged with red, support the weight of the flowers well, even after rain. Its deciduous foliage consists of oval, finely toothed leaves, 5 to 15 cm long, in a fairly dark green. Flowering takes place from July to September, sometimes as early as the second half of June and lasting until October, depending on the climate. The 15 cm-long inflorescences form broad, compact and slightly rounded cones. They are mainly composed of large, decorative sterile florets. Initially greenish white, they become creamy white, then gradually take on pale pink and dusky pink tones. The dried flowers can be left on the shrub over winter or cut to make bouquets. Hardiness: down to –25 °C for a mature, well-established plant.
Panicle hydrangea 'Silver Dollar' can be used in a shrub border, a small flowering hedge or in a large container. It can be grown in many regions, even in a garden exposed to wind or close to the coast. In a romantic border, it can be paired with other decorative shrubs and perennials that flower towards the end of the season. Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Joker', the anemone 'Honorine Jobert', Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Rosea' and geranium 'Dreamland' will surround it with flowers and attractively coloured foliage at this time of year.

Planting and care
Place Hydrangea paniculata Silver Dollar in sun or partial shade, preferably in spring or autumn. It thrives in cool but well-drained, moderately fertile soil. When planting, place your hydrangea in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (dehydrated horn or blood) will encourage your plant to establish and feed it without any risk of scorching. If your soil tends to be dry, mix a large quantity of potting compost into the soil as you backfill the planting hole, and create a watering basin on the surface. New growth starts fairly late in spring.

- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
