Description

Edgeworthia chrysantha offers a very unique flowering in late winter. Its small flowers in cones, white and golden yellow, are grouped in silky pompoms. They appear on the naked wood between February and March depending on the regions. These inflorescences diffuse a pleasant fragrance reminiscent of cloves. To enjoy this fragrance, place it in a high traffic area.

After its winter flowering, Edgeworthia chrysantha is adorned with fine foliage of a pretty intense light green that will disappear in autumn. Its bushy shape with a flared cup is naturally aesthetic, it does not require pruning. However, to have a healthy paper bush, it is absolutely necessary to meet its requirements. Although easier to grow in milder regions, under ideal conditions, some references consider it hardy down to -10°C (14 °F) or even -15°C (5 °F)!

If you choose to grow it in a pot, you will need to bring it indoors to a veranda at the first frost, like orangery plants. In any case, this very unique and still unknown bush will not go unnoticed in your garden.

Planting and care

The location of planting Edgeworthia chrysantha is crucial for its hardiness. It needs sunlight and a sheltered spot from the wind. It does not tolerate limestone soils, so a well-dug planting hole enriched with heather soil is necessary. Once established, avoid transplanting it. It thrives in well-drained soil to withstand the harshness of winter but requires regular watering in summer. To acidify the soil and reduce watering, spread a mulch of bark or pine needles in summer. In the first few years, it is advisable to protect it from cold temperatures with a winter cover. Also, be careful of late frosts that can damage its flowering. Pruning is only necessary in spring to remove dead wood.
