Thanks to Julie for preparing the order and to the shipping department for their assistance. After trimming the dead branches, the bare-root rose bush I received still appears healthy. I have planted it near yellow and orange roses and now I am patiently hoping for successful growth... or not?

Description

The English Rose Lady of Shalott is a David Austin 2010 creation. It is a shrub rose with abundant and repeat flowering.  Lady of Shalott quickly forms beautiful English roses from June to October. These flowers are double and very round, in the shape of a calyx and filled with freely arranged petals. The roses are clustered with a delicate scent of apple and cloves.  Each petal has an upper side of salmon pink contrasting with the other side of an attractive golden yellow. This group of flowers stands well above the foliage on slightly curved stems. The leaves are of a medium green.

The shrub rose has excellent disease resistance and is very vigorous. It is a reliable plant. It reaches a height of 1.20m (4ft) to 1.50m (5ft). The Lady of Shalott Rose is perfect for rose beds as well as mixed flower beds. It easily dominates perennial plants. It can also be grown on a patio or in a large pot with a diameter of at least 40cm (16in) and a depth of 70cm (28in). Its nuanced colour blends well with yellow and blue shades as well as the unique colours of Hot Chocolate or Brown Velvet.

This English rose is named after the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It was named to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth. The Lady of Shalott lived in a castle near Camelot, King Arthur's castle, and was held under a spell until she saw the reflection of Sir Lancelot in a mirror.

Planting and care

Roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. Plant them from October to April. Easy to grow, roses appreciate loose, permeable, and humus-rich soils. They prefer a soil with a neutral pH, but will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in), crumble the soil well, and place a base amendment such as bonemeal at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1 inch) of soil, backfill, and water thoroughly to remove air pockets. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering. Prune its branches by one-third each spring.  The Lady of Shalott rose is highly disease-resistant.
