Plant purchased in May 2019. It produced a few pendulous shoots that were weak and sickly, then disappeared. I uprooted it to put it in a pot and try to save it: no new shoots. I was refunded for my purchase. Left outside in a pot during the winter, the plant came back to life this spring, but in a dwarf form: one third of the size of another young plant purchased to replace it.

Description

The Rodgersia podophylla forms a running rhizome stump which, under good conditions, can form beautiful colonies. This beautiful undergrowth perennial has deciduous, palmate leaves with 5 lobed leaflets that are roughly toothed at the end. They are initially bronze in color, then become dark green with bronze highlights, and finally take on absolutely stunning autumn colors, such as purple, red or orange. The inflorescences, which are finer and less numerous than in other species, are pure white and are borne on slender stems. Easy to grow, Rodgersia podophylla thrives in partial shade, in any moist and humus-bearing soil. It looks superb when planted alongside astilbes and hostas.

Planting and care

Although very cold-resistant, they may not adapt well to a continental climate that is too hot in summer, but in the cool regions of the English Channel coast, they become truly spectacular. They particularly thrive in a soil that is rich in humus, always moist, even with a tendency towards clay, under the protection of light shade. They dislike a soil that is too dry or chalky, as well as a windy exposure that burns the foliage.
