Description

The Primula acaulis Rambo F1 'Scarlet' is a stemless primrose from a new series that stands out for its sturdy and vigorous plants, with flowers easily reaching 6 cm (2in) in diameter. 'Scarlet' stands out with its bicoloured flowers, with petals of a beautiful and flamboyant bright red around a small golden yellow heart. These generous, flat and open flowers are very early: they bloom in the heart of winter, in January and February, on a cushion of dark green leaves. Plant this primrose along the edge of a bed or path or in a balcony planter, in partial shade and in soil that retains moisture.

The Primula acaulis, also known as Primula vulgaris, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the primrose family, a wild species found in our meadows and woodlands. 'Scarlet' is a recent hybrid that stands out for its vigour and large flowers. It is a floriferous plant, which forms a lovely clump of luxuriant foliage in a matter of months, reaching a height of 15 cm (6in) and a width of approximately 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in). It develops more or less evergreen rosettes of spatulate, wavy and veined leaves, ranging from medium to dark green.

The Rambo F1 'Scarlet' stemless primrose is tough, not intimidated by climatic changes, and easy to grow. Queen of winter balconies and path edges, it is best positioned to be visible from the house, as it is the first to bloom at a time when we don't always feel like going out. This plant sets the stage for the upcoming primroses, followed by forget-me-nots, narcissus, Siberian squill, and Crocus. Under the cover of bushes, in partial shade, they brighten up flowerbeds, rockeries, and short grass meadows, among the snowdrops and violets.

Benefits: The same as those of the officinal primrose and the tall primrose: the flowers are soothing and calming, used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Planting and care

Primroses can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible upon receipt, in September-October or in March-April. If the intended location is not yet ready or the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can grow them on as plug plants for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good potting soil for flowering plants (geranium-type potting soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful of excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week in the watering can. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once the flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in semi-shade.
