More information

A medium-sized variety with heart-shaped leaves, almost white in the centre, edged with blue, which gradually turn green as the season progresses. This hosta forms a dense cushion that brightens up shady borders. In July-August, stems adorned with lavender flowers rise from the clump. Easy to grow in humus-bearing, damp but well-drained soil, it thrives in partial shade or light shade.

Description

'Teacher's Pride' is an elegant and bright white and blue variegated hosta derived from the famous Hosta 'Halcyon'. Its heart-shaped leaves display a creamy white centre in spring, broadly edged with blue-green, then the centre gradually takes on a light green hue. Of medium size and changing colour, this cultivar forms an architectural mound that easily finds a place in the partially shaded and damp areas of the garden.

This Hosta, or Funkia, is a very hardy, deciduous, rhizomatous perennial from the Asparagaceae family. Its foliage disappears in winter, leaving a fleshy crown in the soil that regrows in spring. It is a mutation of Hosta 'Halcyon', obtained by the Dutch hybridiser Jannes van Rossum and commercially available since the mid-2000s.
This variety is classified among medium-sized hostas. Its growth is described as medium to rather slow compared to its parent: it takes two to five years to obtain a beautiful, well-formed clump. The foliage reaches a height of around 30 to 35 cm and spreads 50 to 60 cm, or even up to 70 cm under very good conditions. The vegetation forms a rounded, tight mound, formed of more upright leaves in the centre and slightly arched outwards. In spring, the centre of the leaves is a very bright creamy white, highlighted by a fairly wide blue-green margin. This centre quickly reveals fine streaks and small touches of tender green, then turns pale green during summer. The blue-green margin remains sharper. In July50 to 60 cm high scapes rise above the foliage, bearing clusters of tubular flowers, in the shape of lavender to pale lavender bells.
Like most hostas, 'Teacher's Pride' appreciates a deep, humus-rich soil, remaining damp but not waterlogged.

Place 'Teacher's Pride' at the front of a damp, shady border, at the edge of woodland or along a path. It can be planted in small groups in front of taller, darker hostas, or in a large container sheltered from the afternoon sun. It pairs well with hostas 'First Frost' or 'Great Escape', but also with a pink heuchera 'Berry Smoothie' and a small, flexible fern Polystichum 'Shiny Holly Fern'. These plants create a shaded scene dominated by foliage, decorative for a large part of the year.

Planting and care

Plant Teacher's Pride hostas in spring or autumn. Hostas prefer a deep, rich, humus-bearing, loose soil, ideally neutral to acidic (and certainly low in lime), that remains damp to moist throughout the year. Position them in partial shade or dappled shade, and in a location sheltered from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole measuring 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm. If your soil is heavy, mix in an equal amount of compost with the crumbled soil, partially refill the hole, and place your young plant with its root ball so that the top of the ball is covered by 3 cm of soil. Adding a base fertiliser (dried blood, horn meal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without risk of scorching. Ensure the collar is placed well above soil level. Firm the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to help your plant establish. Also, water regularly during a dry summer.

With their shared preference for damp places, slugs and snails are never far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker, tougher foliage, making them less appealing to slugs, these plants must be protected. Protect your Hosta plants by surrounding them with pellets based on ferramol (approved for organic agriculture), crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, woodchip mulch, or any dry, rough natural substance that deters them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against slugs and snails, because unlike chickens, they do not dig up the soil or attack the fresh green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a scent that repels slugs, for example wormwood and garlic.
