Description

The Heuchera 'Georgia Plum', also known as Heuchera 'Georgia Plum', is a new variety. This evergreen perennial is descended from the famous 'Georgia Peach' heuchera. It unfurls its foliage in shades of purple and pink with silver accents, changing and surprising throughout the seasons. Its pale pink bell-shaped flowers add to its charm throughout the summer.

The 'Georgia Plum' heuchera belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. It is a hybrid of Heuchera villosa, native to the mountains of the eastern United States. It will reach a height and width of 30 cm (12in).

This heuchera forms a spreading clump. The evergreen foliage is the major asset of this plant: purple-pink to silver-pink veined with purple-pink. These shades evolve throughout the seasons: depending on the temperature and light intensity, one shade will dominate the others. The light and airy flowering begins in June and continues until August. The pink flowers in small bell shapes are arranged along an upright stem. This plant has a shallow root system.

Easy to maintain, the 'Georgia Plum' heuchera thrives in all types of moist, well-drained soil, in partial shade, and it must be protected from full sun. Plant it in loose soil and consider adding mulch. It prefers well-draining soil with rocks both inside and on top of the soil. However, it does not tolerate very hot conditions. Sandy and poor soils should be avoided. Also, avoid planting it near vigorous perennials.

Heucheras have rather shallow root systems, so you should plant them slightly deeper than the crown (where the foliage originates). After a few years of growth or when dividing them, you should replant them slightly deeper, taking care to remove lignified parts.

The 'Georgia Plum' heuchera can be planted in the ground in a flower bed, in a shady and cool rock garden, or in a pot. When planted in a flower bed, this heuchera will bring dynamism to the garden. Pair it with hostas, grasses, and ferns for a wild effect. It also makes a good companion for bushes and roses when planted in woodland areas. In a rock garden, place a contrasting mulch at its feet to highlight its beautiful foliage. Lastly, it makes an ideal ground cover with remarkable colours. Pair this heuchera with blue flowers, the only colour it truly lacks, and it will be a perfect complement. It is an ideal plant for filling pots, containers, and flower boxes. A good cut flower, its delicate bell-shaped flowers bring a lot of lightness to bouquets.

Heucheras with trembling stems and tiny bells were very fashionable in 19th-century gardens throughout Europe. They were named 'Painter's Despair' by the Impressionist painters, who likely attempted to depict them in vain.

Planting and care

Easy to maintain, 'Georgia Plum' Heuchera thrives in all fresh, light, well-drained soils, in partial shade, and it is essential to avoid full sun. You will plant it in loose soil, potentially providing mulch. It likes well-drained soil and rocks both inide and above the ground. However, it does not tolerate very hot conditions. Sandy and poor soils should be avoided. Also, avoid the proximity of overly vigorous perennials. Heucheras have rather shallow root systems and you should plant them slightly deeper than the crown (the point of origin of the foliage). After a few years of growth or when dividing them, you should replant them slightly deeper, taking care to remove the lignified parts. Prepare a planting hole measuring 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your bucket (after removing the pot) so that the top of the root ball of your plant is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a base fertilizer (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firm the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate your plant's recovery. In late winter, Heucheras renew their foliage, and we recommend cutting back the leaves from the previous year in January and February.
