My" spreading hellebore once again bears no resemblance to the photo... Double and white indeed, but no dots, nothing guttatus, and it does not look like the customer's published photo either. For its first flowering, it is all white and the outer petals take on a rosy hue, ending the flowering season.

Description

Helleborus x hybridus Double White Spotted is a charming variety with beautiful white flowers speckled with red, in the heart of winter, becoming greener as the flower matures. It has large double, regular flowers. This robust and very hardy perennial can be grown as a border plant and under shrubs, in mixed borders, or in pots. Easy to grow, even in heavy and poorly drained soil, it will thrive in shade or non-burning sun, bringing softness and light.

Originally from central and east Caucasus, Helleborus orientalis, sometimes called Lenten Rose, is a perennial belonging to the ranunculaceae family, which is distinguished by the strong red to brown punctuation of its petals. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F), naturally growing in forests, thickets and clearings up to 2000 m (6562ft) altitude.

The 'Double White Spotted' variety forms a bushy, compact and leafy clump, about 40 cm (16in) in all directions of palmate, evergreen basal leaves, slightly toothed, dark green and shiny, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets. They live only 8 months and are regularly replaced by new leaves.

Between February and April, a bouquet of double, cup-shaped flowers, 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, forms, inclined downwards, letting the water slide off like an umbrella to protect the heart of the flower from rotting. Hellebore does not like to be moved once established, with young shoots taking some time to flower. The seeds are sown by ants.

Use hellebores like elements of an ancient tapestry, mixing them with brightly coloured woodland plants. They are showcased when planted near Pieris, moderately sized rhododendrons, under conifers (especially on windy sites), surrounded by primroses, wood anemones, corydalis, dicentras, cardamines, or spring-flowering bulbs and snowdrops. You can also accompany them with ferns and shade irises to create a beautiful contrast a little later in the season. They can be planted in groups, like a bouquet, near the entrance of the house, in a shaded position, to enjoy their early flowering up close. They are suitable as cut flowers and in groups, borders or even containers,... Over time, Hellebore flowers do not fade like the majority of other flowers but dry out.

Each seed-sown hellebore is unique in flower colour: thus slight variations in colors may exist between two plants, this is normal and inevitable. However, if the difference is too significant and distorts the desired effect, we will refund or replace the affected plant.

Planting and care

Helleborus Double White Spotted grows in any rich, light or clayey soil, without excessive limestone, in partial or light shade, sheltered from cold winds. Direct sunlight should be avoided during the hottest hours. This perennial should be planted from early autumn to spring, between February and April. It thrives in deeply cultivated soil mixed with organic matter. To feed, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. Water the plants well and add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove faded leaves to improve flowering. Ensure a planting distance of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) between each plant to promote their development. Hellebore does not tolerate stagnant water, as it may cause rotting.

The roots should not completely dry out in summer. Hellebores can be affected by a fungal disease transmitted by aphids, known as black spot. Remove old leaves from deciduous species or stained leaves from evergreen species when flower buds appear. Remove faded flowers after the seeds fall. They can also suffer from grey rot or die from collar rot due to poor growing conditions, such as excessive moisture.

On a balcony or terrace, plant them in pots 4 to 5 times larger than their size, as they need space to develop their root system. Most hellebores can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F) without suffering, allowing them to adapt to almost all regions.
