Description

Helleborus x hybridus Double Pink is an elegant variety with double flowers, with petals tinted in pale pink and flesh pink.

Originally from northwest Turkey to the Caucasus, northeastern Greece, the Oriental Hellebore is a perennial plant that will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F) with palmate, slightly toothed, dark green and shiny, evergreen basal leaves, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

The Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) at maturity and spreads over 30 cm (12in). Between February and April, a bouquet of single, cup-shaped and inclined flowers, 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, forms. Hellebore is a bushy plant which does not like to be moved once established, as the young plants take some time to flower.

It is suitable as cut flowers and in borders, edges, or containers. Over time, the flowers of the Hellebore do not fade like the majority of other flowers but dry out instead.

Each seed-sown Hellebore has a unique flower colour: thus slight colour variations may exist between two plants, which is normal and unavoidable. If, however, the difference is too significant and spoils the desired effect, we refund or replace the affected plant.

Planting and care

Double Pink Oriental Hellebore grows in any acidic, rich and light soil, in partial or light shade, sheltered from cold winds. This perennial can be planted from early autumn to spring, between February and April. It thrives in deeply worked soil mixed with organic matter. To feed, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. Water the plants well then add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove wilted leaves to improve flowering. Ensure a planting distance of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) between each plant to promote their growth. The Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it can cause it to rot.
