Description

These robust perennials form bushy clumps that spread through their creeping underground rhizomes. They have retained good hardiness from their origins.

Forms a clump of upright stems reaching a height of 1.50m (5ft). The compound leaves measure from 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24in) long. The mauve-blue flowers, arranged in long narrow spikes, are followed by pendulous pods.

Planting and care

They grow in any well-drained moist soil, preferably in sunny locations when in cooler regions. They can become invasive when they are thriving. This characteristic can be used to your advantage by planting them in a large border of perennial plants alongside Thermopsis, Baptisia, Oriental poppies, salvias, etc. Vigorous pruning of the stems in early summer will result in a slight re-flowering in September.
