Description

Euphorbia palustris 'Walenburg's Glory' is distinguished from the Marsh Spurge primarily by its denser vegetation. It is a large deciduous perennial with a bushy habit and a long, light and bright yellow flowering that loves the violet of irises and salvias, between April and June. The foliage colour, green during the summer, gradually takes on magnificent orange hues and becomes more red in autumn. It thrives in full sun or partial shade, in moist soil or at the edge of ponds, and is not afraid of harsh winters. It is a majestic and easy-to-grow plant that adapts to any garden soil and accepts heavy and wet soils.

Widespread throughout almost all of Europe, the marsh spurge extends from Scandinavia to Spain, and from the Caucasus to Russia. This beautiful herbaceous perennial of the euphorbia family forms a large, majestic, and rounded clump. The variety 'Walenburg's Glory' is an improvement of this species, but it is even more compact and bushy, occupying 90 cm (35in) in all directions. From mid-spring, it bears compound umbels of light yellow bracts at the top of upright stems. The foliage resembles that of willows, with a more pronounced central vein. The beautiful green colour of the leaves during the growing season takes on shaded colours from orange to red in autumn. Its growth is rapid, and the flowers are carried by the most vigorous shoots that developed in the previous spring. Care must be taken when cleaning in winter.

The Marsh Spurge grows in marshy areas, along rivers or bodies of water. In your garden, combine it with violet or blue flowers, and plants with the same requirements such as tiered primroses, summer snowflakes, or water irises that contrast pleasantly with the yellow flowers. Plant it around a body of water and wherever the soil is not too dry.

Euphorbia is a widely spread and highly diversified genus all over the planet, including shrubs, annuals, and perennials, some of which closely resemble cacti. Beware, the hollow stems of euphorbias contain latex, an irritant substance for sensitive skin and dangerous if it comes into contact with the eyes.

Planting and care

Plant the Euphorbia palustris in a sunny location or possibly in partial shade, it tolerates any type of soil as long as it is rich and not too dry. The limestone doesn't matter. You can enrich the planting hole with humus and compost if your soil is too poor. When planting, consider its final size and space the plants sufficiently (minimum 50 cm (20in)).

Equip yourself with gloves and goggles, the latex present in the stems and leaves causes irritations.
