Description

The Lobelia 'Hot Bavaria' is undoubtedly one of the best new releases in recent years. Derived from a cutting, this small annual plant is particularly vigorous and heat-resistant. Forming a beautiful semi-trailing dome, it blooms in both sun and shade, making it perfect for hanging baskets and balconies from summer until the first frost. Not only is it sturdy, but it dazzles with flowering that transforms it into a cloud of small bicoloured blooms, bright blue with a white centre. An easy plant to grow, it is essential in summer compositions.

Lobelia 'Hot Bavaria' is a plant from the Campanulaceae family, of horticultural origin. It is derived, among others, from Lobelia erinus, a South African annual species and a staple in container gardening. The numerous branching and slender stems of the 'Hot Bavaria' variety form a cushion measuring 30 cm (12in) in all directions that fills hanging baskets throughout the summer and blends in with taller summer plants. Its small alternate, obovate, and slightly serrated leaves create a graceful background for the multitude of flowers that bloom all summer long. About 1 cm (0in) in diameter, they are tubular at the base and then flare out into three downward-facing petals and two smaller upward-facing petals, resembling insect antennae. These flowers are regularly visited by pollinating insects. Arranged in small loose clusters, they give the plant a beautifully airy and semi-trailing habitTheir colour is bright and vibrant, thanks to the three small white fingers that underline the base of the petals, which are a stunning blue.

Lobelia also earns its place as a standalone plant in a pot, brightening up every corner of courtyards and terraces. It blends in with the pastel shades of romantic compositions, complementing the softness of petunias, the silvery foliage of Helichrysum, and the whiteness of verbenas. However, it also contrasts pleasantly with the pale yellow of Vanilla marigolds or Million Bells Lemon petunias. You can even plant it as a border plant, especially if you have a small garden, preferably in a sunny (not scorching) spot, but also in partial shade. The enchanting spectacle of its flowering never tires; this small plant will always find a place near the house.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before placing them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Lobelia is a tender plant that only survives the winter in areas with a very mild climate. It is grown as an annual in other regions. Plant it outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location, or even a bright shady spot. Annual lobelia appreciates a well-drained, light, moist, and humus-rich soil. Water regularly and add fertiliser every two weeks via the watering can. After each flowering period, lightly prune the stems to stimulate new blooms. You can also take cuttings. The 'Hot' series lobelias are more heat tolerant than the classic varieties, but they still need a soil that remains slightly moist.
