Description

Lobelia 'Deep Blue Star' looks like a dazzling royal blue cloud from afar. Its delicate foliage and slender stems are hidden under a quivering mass of intensely blue flowers, punctuated by a tiny white heart. Nothing stops the flowering and growth of this excellent early and floriferous variety, not even the sweltering heat of midsummer. Blooming until the first frost, with a semi-trailing habit, this annual creates an enchanting and long-lasting display, even in full sun, confidently filling hanging baskets and balconies. Essential in summer compositions!

Lobelia 'Deep Blue Star' is a plant from the Campanulaceae family of horticultural origin. It is derived from, among others, Lobelia erinus, a South African annual species, a must-have for container gardening. Propagated by cuttings, it is a more resistant and robust plant than lobelias grown from seeds. The numerous branched stems of the 'Deep Blue Star' variety form a tight ball, at least 25cm (10in) high and 30cm (12in) wide, in a single season. Its small alternate, obovate, and slightly serrated leaves form a backdrop for the multitude of medium-sized flowers that continue to bloom throughout the summer. As they elongate, the flower spikes bear clustered flowers. Their corollas measure 2cm (1in) in width and 1.8cm (1in) in height, and are composed of 2 very fine upper petals and 3 larger lower petals. They are regularly visited by pollinating insects.

Lobelia 'Deep Blue Star' finds its place grown in isolation, in pots, illuminating all corners of courtyards and terraces. It blends in with the pastel shades of other pink, mauve, sky blue, or white varieties, creating a very romantic atmosphere, as well as harmonising with the softness of petunias, the silver foliage of Helichrysum, and the whiteness of Verbena. Its intense blue colour also pleasantly contrasts with the pale yellow of Bidens, Vanilla Marigolds, or Million Bells Lemon Petunias, especially since its exuberant growth is not overshadowed by its more cumbersome neighbours. You can even plant it as an edging plant, especially if you have a small garden, preferably in a sunny (not scorching) spot, but also in partial shade. The fascinating spectacle of its flowering never tires; this little plant will always find a place near the house.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame etc.) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Lobelia 'Deep Blue Star' is tender, so plant it outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Annual Lobelia appreciates a well-drained, light, moist, and humus-rich soil. Water regularly and add fertiliser to the watering can every fifteen days. After each flowering period, prune the stems lightly to stimulate new flowering. You can also take cuttings at this time.

The 'Star' series Lobelia are more heat and full sun tolerant than the classic varieties, but they still need moist soil. You can plant them from April onwards as they can withstand temperatures close to freezing, which causes their leaves to darken. Leave at least 40cm (16in) spacing between each plant when planting them in the ground.
