Description

Lobelia 'Anabel Snow White' is part of a new series of hybrids selected for their vigour, heat resistance, and endless flowering. This small annual forms a beautiful tuft taller than wide, with vegetation disappearing under a quivering mass of pure white flowers. Nothing stops the flowering and growth of this excellent variety that blooms continuously until the first frost. The Anabel series lobelias, variable in their colours, allow for fabulous summer scenes, in pots of course, but also in flowerbeds or even on a green wall.

The Lobelia 'Anabel Snow White' is a plant from the Campanulaceae family of horticultural origin. It is derived from, among others, Lobelia erinus, a South African annual species, a must-have for container gardening. In one season the numerous slender and branched stems of this annual plant form a ball at least 25cm (10in) high and 30cm (12in) wide. Its small alternate, obovate, and slightly serrated leaves are the background to a multitude of medium-sized flowers that renew throughout the summer. As they lengthen, the spikes bear flowers in clusters. Their corollas measure 2cm (1in) in width and 1.8cm (1in) in height, and are composed of 2 very fine petals in the upper part and 3 larger petals in the lower part. They are regularly visited by pollinating insects.

Lobelia 'Anabel Snow White' finds its place grown in isolation, in a pot, illuminating all corners of courtyards and terraces. It blends with the pastel shades of other pink, mauve, blue, or white varieties, in a very romantic spirit, as well as harmonising with the softness of petunias, the silver foliage of Helicrysum, and the whiteness of Verbenas. Its exuberant vegetation will not disappear under that of its more cumbersome neighbours, which allows it to be associated with geraniums, calibrachoas, or nemesis. You can even plant it on the edge of a flowerbed, especially if you have a small garden, in full sun, but also in partial shade. The fascinating spectacle of its cloud-like flowering never tires and will not disappoint; this small plant will always find a place near the house.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame etc.) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Lobelia 'Anabel Snow White' is frost-sensitive, so plant it outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Annual Lobelia appreciates well-drained, light, moist, and humus-rich soil. Water regularly, adding fertiliser every two weeks to the watering can. After each flowering period, lightly prune the stems to stimulate new flowering. You can also take cuttings.

The 'Anabel' series Lobelia are more heat and full sun tolerant than classic varieties, but they still need moist soil. You can plant them from April, as they can tolerate temperatures close to freezing, causing their leaves to darken. Allow at least 40cm (16in) spacing between each plant when planting in the ground.
