Description

Alstroemeria Inca Yuko stands out with its beautiful magenta pink and slightly purple refined flowering, which takes place from June to October. It has a compact habit, ideal for pots and front of borders. Highly appreciated by florists, it looks stunning in bouquets.

Belonging to the Alstroemeriaceae family (Liliaceae), Alstroemeria, or simply the Inca Lily or Peruvian Lily, is a perennial with tuberous roots. Its funnel-shaped flowers are a cross between Lily and Orchid flowers. They are clustered above upright stems, adorned with deciduous medium green foliage. The Inca Yuko variety has a compact habit, reaching an average height of 45cm (18in) and a width of 40cm (16in).

With its South American origins, the Inca Lily has a pronounced preference for warmth. Therefore, it should be planted in a warm and sheltered location, in full sun or partial shade in regions with scorching summers. It thrives in light, deep, well-drained, and humus-rich soil. Its root system may be a bit slow to establish in the first few years, so patience is required... it takes some time for it to settle in.

It is moderately hardy (up to -7°C (19.4°F)), so if grown in pots, it should be protected during winter. In the garden, it can be grown in the ground if your winters are not too harsh. This is the case in coastal areas and south of the Loire River. However, we recommend generously mulching its base before the arrival of the first frosts.

To stimulate its long flowering period, you should remove faded flowers, although Alstroemeria is so elegant in bouquets that it is unlikely to be necessary.

In the garden, it is easy to combine with other plants in a border, in harmony with the Coreopsis 'Limerock Ruby' and the Allium sphaerocephalon.

Planting and care

You will plant your Alstroemerias in a warm and sheltered position, ideally in a light, deep, well-drained and humus-rich soil. If your soil is very heavy, it is advisable to mix in some sand and compost. Its root system can be a little slow in the first few years, so be patient... it needs some time to establish itself. Planting should be done in late spring, once all risk of frost has passed.

Alstroemeria is moderately hardy (up to -7°C (19.4°F)). If grown in a pot, it should be stored frost-free during winter.
