Description

The Ipheion uniflorum or Spring Starflower is an adorable 15cm (6in) tall bulbous plant. It is appreciated for its creeping habit covered with small pale lavender blue star-shaped flowers in March.

Also known as Brodiaea milla or Tristagma, this Ipheion forms a basal clump of 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) long linear, pale bluish-green leaves, resembling coarse grass.

From March to May, solitary star-shaped flowers in pale lavender blue with a darker middle vein, fading to white, measuring 2 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, emit a pleasant sweet scent, similar to honey.

The Ipheion uniflorum thrives in a well-drained, light, even slightly dry soil in sunny locations. Divide overcrowded clumps in September. Protect with a light mulch.

The Ipheion uniflorum can be planted in groups of at least 50 bulbs to create an interesting mass effect, or under deciduous bushes with spring flowering, accompanied by perennials or other bulbs such as crocuses or daffodils. It pairs well with Muscari Armeniacum.

Planting and care

The Ipheion uniflorum should be planted before the end of October, at a depth of 4 to 6 cm (2in), spaced 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) apart in a light and well-drained soil. It prefers a fairly warm exposure, under a bright but filtered light. Protect with a light mulch. Divide overcrowded clumps in September. They do not require any special maintenance. During their growth period, make sure to water them once or twice a week and apply liquid fertiliser once a month. During the dormancy period, leave them alone. Protect from slugs.
