Description
Photinia x fraseri 'Corallina' is a much more compact bush similar to the 'Red Robin' variety. The vivid red young foliage contrasts with the green of the mature leaves. Reaching a maximum height of 1.50m, it is ideal for container cultivation as well as for mass planting.
This evergreen Photinia has a bushy, rounded, and ramified habit, with alternate, slightly dentate, vivid red, then shiny green leaves, measuring approximately 6cm (2.4in). The foliage is smaller than its cousin, the 'Red Robin'. In March, clusters of small white flowers appear at the ends of the young branches and can reach 10cm (3.9in) in diameter.
The fast-growing Photinia x fraseri 'Corallina' tolerates all types of well-drained, fertile, moist to dry soil, in sunny or semi-shaded locations. It is an easy-to-cultivate and maintain bush that can withstand temperatures down to -18°C when exposed to the sun.
Photinia x fraseri 'Corallina' is highly decorative when planted alone or in mass plantings, alongside white spring-flowering shrubs such as Spirea or Mock Orange.
Tips: Avoid soils that are too chalky or clayey. Pruning for balance is necessary in summer.

Photinia x fraseri 'Corallina' should be planted in spring or autumn in any deep, fertile and well-drained soil. It prefers a sunny or semi-shaded exposure, sheltered from cold and strong winds. Adding compost is necessary at planting. Water well for the first two years, once or twice a week. Mulch the soil to keep it slightly moist in summer and protect the base in winter. Prune in summer to balance the habit, cutting back half of the branches. This will promote the growth of young red leaves in autumn. In humid weather, photinias can be affected by a fungus (entomosporiosis). Keep an eye on the leaves, if red to black spots appear, treat with Bordeaux mixture.
