Description

Rosa Sweet Eureka is a modern and recent hybrid tea rose whose high-class roses are reminiscent of those of the famous Mme A Meilland rose. Its large, double flowers are elegantly turbinate, pleasantly bi-coloured, and lightly scented. Tender pastel yellow at the heart, they unfurl delicately marginated pale petals tinged with carmine pink. They emit a sweet and spicy fragrance. The bush develops disease-resistant foliage that remains beautiful throughout the season. This rose is generous, robust, and full of elegance. It is perfect in a mass planting, and its cut flowers are sublime in a vase.

Rosa Sweet Eureka is an excellent new creation from French creator and producer Meilland. It is a modern hybrid tea rose bush with large flowers. This dense, bushy, well-balanced, and erect shrub reaches about 80m (262ft) in height and 50cm (20in) in width at maturity. It has a rapid growth rate. It produces strong, thorny, and well-branched stems. The elegant foliage is initially bronze before turning glossy dark green. It is highly disease resistant. Throughout summer, the plant produces large 10cm (4in) diameter flowers, with the typical turbinate shape of hybrid tea roses. They are composed of 31 petals with a slightly undulated carmine margin and open to a tightly packed centre. They are solitary, sometimes grouped in 2 or 3, carried at the end of long shoots from the current year or by those that emerge from 2-year-old stems. The rose will flower continuously if faded blooms are regularly removed. The repeat-flowering is characterised by a light and very pleasant spicy fragrance.

Rosa Sweet Eureka deserves an elegant setting near to the house. Light-flowering perennial plants (autumn asters, foxgloves, penstemons), grasses, and catmints, are ideal for enhancing its beauty and accompanying it late in the season. For example, combine it with Geranium 'Rozanne', G. 'Pink Cloud', G. grandiflorum, panic grass, Nepeta 'Walker's Low', and campanulas. It will look good when isolated, for example, in groups of 3 plants in the middle of a bed covered with silver basket, aubrietas, or Cerastostigma plumbaginoides that will bloom successively at its base from spring to autumn. Pretty herbaceous clematis with blue flowers (Clematis heracleifolia) will enhance its bi-coloured roses. Its flowers make beautiful romantic bouquets, accompanied by soft pink or red peonies and white lilacs.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny or partially-shaded location. Modern roses are tolerant, but do not like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add fertiliser to the bottom of the planting hole (dried blood or dehydrated horn, for example). Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are a natural phenomenon and will not harm the rose.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning is essential for flowering. It is done in three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have flowered during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove the faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters in order to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have developed into shoots 2 to 3cm (1in) long, trim the young strong branches by a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, will be kept to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1cm (0.4in) above an outward-facing bud.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
