Pentsemon does not appear in my garden, instead I have 3 young plants that my neighbour calls wood of Mary, foliage, no flowers. I confess, I order, my husband plants. It is while looking at my order today to check the already ordered raspberry plants that I realize that these three pretty flowers are not in my garden, what a shame. I would have taken more but it's another 15 euros... what happened?

A beautiful perennial producing an abundance of small campanulate flowers from June to August, and even into autumn. The blooms are soft pink with a white throat, creating a pink mist on a small and bushy plant. Unlike other varieties, 'Souvenir d'Adrien Regnier' is not only water-saving but also hardy to -10°C (14°F) in well-drained soil. Full of charm in summer borders or planted in a pot on a patio, it is also a very pretty plant for a not too dry rockery.

Description

Penstemon 'Souvenir d'Adrien Régnier' is an old variety, acclaimed by gardeners around the world. This bushy plant is not very tall. It has a vibrant pink and white flowering that is vigorous, abundant, and long-lasting. Its bell-shaped flowers are large and produced profusely, from early summer until October, on a compact bush with bright green foliage. Unlike other penstemons, it is a fairly hardy perennial when planted in light soil that does not retain too much water in winter. Charming in summer beds or planted in pots on a patio, it is also a very pretty rockery plant and a lovely cut flower.

'Souvenir d'Adrien Régnier' is a bushy and woody perennial plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family, just like foxgloves and snapdragons. It originates from the excellent Penstemon heterophyllus, a North American botanical species that is one of the easiest to grow in our climates. This 'Souvenir d'Adrien Régnier' variety forms beautiful bushy clumps that reach 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) in all directions, with branched stems covered in abundant foliage. The foliage is finely lanceolate and bright green. It is semi-evergreen to evergreen, depending on the severity of the winter. Its growth rate is quite rapid. The flowering period extends from June to September-October, developing at the terminal part of the leafy stems. The bell-shaped flowers are gathered in tight clusters. They display a delightful 'strawberry ice' pink colour and reveal an almost white throat striped with bright carmine red veins. The plant will adapt to any good garden soil that is properly drained and not too dry in summer.

'Souvenir d'Adrien Régnier' is ideal in flower beds or borders, among perennials such as agapanthus, bellflowers, catmints, perennial geraniums, or mixed with shrubs such as English roses or Perovskia. It blends well with light annuals such as love-in-a-mist and cornflowers. It will mingle among the stones of a rockery that is not too dry (and in non-limestone soil), alongside cotton lavenders, rockroses, or diffused lithodoras. Its pastel pink flowers are enhanced by dark foliage, such as that of Weigela 'Minor Black' or Physocarpus 'Summer Wine'. It also performs very well in pots with proper drainage and regular watering and fertiliser applications. Penstemons also make very good cut flowers.

Planting and care

The hardiness of Penstemon 'Souvenir d'Adrien Régnier' is rather good. It withstands temperatures of around -12°C (10.4°F) for short periods of time, provided that the soil is very well-drained in winter and with good protection of the stump under a thick layer of leaves or straw. It does not tolerate heavy and wet soils in winter, but can adapt to well-tilled and well-drained good garden soil.

To successfully grow hybrid penstemons, the nature of the soil is crucial. These mountainous plants prefer rather rich, light, occasionally dry to moist, very well-drained soils, especially in winter. They fear hot summers and excessively dry conditions. In overly wet soils, they quickly rot. In cool climates, place the plants in a warm and sunny location, elevated and sheltered from cold winds (south or west exposure). In hot climates, choose a rather cool and semi-shaded exposure. In very cold regions, it is advisable to take stem cuttings in autumn.

Penstemon does not have any specific diseases. This plant requires only minimal maintenance, but when you remove faded flowers in autumn, make sure to slightly shorten the flowerless stems without cutting them down to the ground, especially in regions with humid winters. Indeed, the foliage plays an important role in moisture regulation. As with shrubby salvias, wait until spring is well established (March-April) to shorten branches whose foliage has been damaged by the cold. If summer is dry, water regularly to support flowering. In the coldest regions, cover the stump with glass or a frame to protect it from severe cold. Divide your penstemons every three or four years to rejuvenate them, but wait until spring to perform this operation.
