Description

Bushy perennial plant, the Bloody Cranesbill thrives in poor and rocky soil. Perennial geraniums are good ground cover plants highly appreciated for their ease of cultivation, as well as the abundance and duration of their flowering.

In early summer, the Bloody Cranesbill bears large dark pink flowers with purple stripes. Its flowering stems continue to grow after flowering. The cup-shaped flowers measure 4 cm (2in) in diameter. Its deciduous foliage is deeply incised and very dense. The name "sanguineum" is dedicated to its apple green foliage, which changes color at the end of the season to become yellow-orange with red tones. This coloration intensifies in autumn as the temperature amplitude increases.

A beautiful border plant, the Bloody Cranesbill grows in well-drained soil and in the sun.

Planting and care

To plant your Geranium sanguineum, dig the soil to a depth of 20 cm in a cube, crumbling the soil well and placing a soil improver such as blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, free of its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to help the root ball take hold.
