More information

This is a special type of mini-cyclamen with a unique feature – its flowers face downwards. The beautiful bouquet is made of small white sepals and large dark red petals, creating a striking two-tone effect. It blooms for a long time, from October through January. The plant has a rounded shape with lovely dark green foliage that is veined and marbled with grey-green. This plant prefers partial shade and can be placed indoors or on a balcony. It can also be grown as an annual in a slightly shaded flowerbed because it is sensitive to frost.

Description

The mini-Cyclamen Dijx Red Wine stands out for the originality of its flowering, both in terms of its completely inverted shape and deep red and white colours. It is a tender plant, but its flowering, which extends from autumn to the heart of winter, is a definite asset for decorating interiors during this period, which is generally not conducive to flowering. The plant has a very nicely rounded habit, with beautiful dark green foliage veined and marbled with grey-green. The mini-cyclamen is often grown as an annual, in partial shade or shade under trees, along pathways, or in shaded rockeries where it creates a sensation.

The Cyclamen Super Serie Djix 'Red Wine' belongs to the Primulaceae family. It comes from the Persian cyclamen, renowned for its beautiful winter floweringIt is a small perennial plant with tuberous roots, but not very hardy and unable to withstand frost. The Cyclamen Dijx 'Red Wine' tubers are rounded and compressed, covered with smooth and velvety 'skin' and roots originating from their centre and base. The vegetative cycle of cyclamens depends on their genetics and growing conditions. In the 'Djix Red Wine' variety, the resting period corresponds to summer; the plant starts growing at the end of summer and blooms from October to January. In regions spared from frost, it is possible to leave the tubers in the ground. The leaves, which are rounded and cordate in shape, measure about 4 cm (2in) in diameter. The colour of the leaves is a dark green veined and maculated with pale green to grey-green. Together, they form a small cushion with a diameter of 25 cm (10in). The flowering emerges from the cushion at a height of 25 cm (10in). The sharp floral buds, initially lying on the ground, stand upright on brown peduncles. Each flower consists of 5 large dark red petals, slightly twisted and completely curved backwards. They are enclosed in a small collar of 3 to 5 small white sepals, which are very attractive. As soon as the flowering is finished, in January, the foliage turns yellow, disappears, and the plant goes into a resting period. At this time of year, watering should be reduced, and the plant should be stored in a cool place.

Plant the Cyclamen Super Serie Djix in a pot or container with variegated miniature ivy Kolibri, heucheras, euphorbias that tolerate partial shade, or dwarf spindle trees. Planted en masse in a mix of colours, mini-cyclamens form ephemeral but unforgettable carpets in shaded areas of the garden, along with begonias and impatiens. They will also find their place in a partially shaded rockery, not too dry, alongside blanda anemones and liverworts. Their red and white flowering is perfect for decorating tables during the end-of-year festivities.

Planting and care

Planting of the Super Series Djix 'Red Wine' mini cyclamen:

  • Place clay balls in the bottom of your planter to facilitate drainage and root aeration.
  • Fill the planter three-quarters full with good quality, well-draining soil.
  • Water around the root ball, not in the centre of the plant, to avoid causing the bulb to rot.

You can also grow this variety in the ground as an annual, in a shaded bed protected from cold winds. It can withstand the first frosts, up to around -2°C (28.4°F). It tolerates summer heat and drought well, as the tubers are dormant during this time.

Maintenance:

Indoors, avoid excessive heat, watering, dry air, and direct sunlight.

Place your cyclamen in a room maintained at around 15°C (59°F), away from direct sunlight.

Place a saucer under your planter; this will facilitate watering.

During the growth and flowering period, water regularly, always waiting for the substrate to be almost dry between two waterings. Empty the saucer 2 hours after watering if necessary. Remove faded flowers as they appear. Optionally, use a fertilizer for flowering plants.

After flowering, reduce and stop watering; do not give any more fertiliser. Cut off dry leaves. Repot your mini cyclamen in a larger container. Once the foliage is completely dry, store your planter frost-free in a shaded and minimally heated room. Begin watering gradually again at the end of summer.
