Description

The Coreopsis 'Cosmic Eye' is a perennial herbaceous plant forming a compact and dense clump, reaching a height of 35 cm (14in) and a width of 40 cm (16in). Its green and delicate foliage is topped with splendid bicolored heads, surrounded by a row of ligulate bordeaux florets with wide margins of golden yellow. A truly beautiful new variety, highly floriferous with a spectacular contrast of colors!

'Cosmic Eye' is a recent creation by Darell Probst, a famous American breeder specializing in Coreopsis cultivation. This cultivar has a compact and dense habit, robust and well-branched. It measures 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in), and spreads over 45 to 50 cm (18 to 20in). It is extremely cold and disease resistant. Its lanceolate foliage, glossy emerald green, finely cut, remains healthy and attractive from spring to autumn. From June to October, its long and generous flowering with 4 to 5 cm (2in) diameter heads provides a spectacular and vibrant contrast of colors. The ligulate florets on the periphery of the inflorescence are delicately cut, the beautiful bordeaux is marginate with golden yellow,

Highly decorative and easy to grow, this splendid novelty vigorous and very hardy, will find its place in all gardens, planted in full sun. With its long and abundant golden yellow and bordeaux flowering, 'Cosmic Eye' will bring brightness and light to borders, flowerbeds, mixed borders, and rock gardens. Its finely cut and light foliage will blend well with plants with stiffer foliage, such as Daylilies, Coneflowers, Red Hot Pokers, or Irises. This variety will be the ideal companion for perennial plants, ornamental grasses, and ground-cover roses. It can be paired with Shrubby Salvias, Panicle Phloxes, Gauras, and Yarrows, for example. It will be stunning when planted in containers on the terrace, to fully enjoy the extraordinary spectacle of its flowering! The flowers of this cultivar make splendid cut flowers and will bring colour to your bouquets.

Planting and care

The Coreopsis 'Cosmic Eye' is a robust variety and highly resistant to diseases, hardy. Low maintenance and very easy to grow, it is perfectly suited for the novice gardener. It only requires to be planted in a sunny location with well-drained soil. However, the quality of the soil doesn't matter much to it. Very accommodating, it will thrive in rich, loose, and moist soil, as well as in soil with relatively low moisture, poor, rocky, and sandy, as it is very tolerant to drought. It is recommended to divide the clumps every 2 to 3 years, in spring, in order to maintain beautiful and floriferous young plants.
