Description

The plants in the 'Dahlia Cactus Hybrids Mixed' mixture display opulent cactus flowers, bristling with tightly rolled petals, in various colors. The majority of them are highly double. This selection produces flowers in a wide range of colors, perfect for bouquets. Flowering from summer to autumn, from the year of sowing, these vigorous and floriferous plants are the stars of cottage gardens and vegetable gardens. They deserve a prime spot in sunny borders.

Dahlias belong to the large asteraceae family and are originally native to the high plateaus of Mexico. At present, the some 20,000 horticultural varieties obtained by humans have invaded, to our greatest pleasure, gardens all over the world. Dahlias are classified according to the shape of their flowers. The 'Dahlia Cactus Hybrids Mixed' is classified in the category of decorative dahlias with cactus flowers. In this group, the colored ligules of the head are arranged in pompoms, they are completely rolled up on themselves and give the heads a bristly appearance. For plants of this variety, the heads reach 10 cm (3.9 in) in diameter and show different solid or gradient colors: white, yellow, orange, pink, dark pink. Flowering takes place from July to October. The plants will reach at least 1m (3.3 ft) in height, and 60 cm in width, with a bushy and erect habit. The highly branched stems are hollow and the leaves are opposite, pinnately compound, meaning they are divided into 3 or 5 leaflets, which have very denticulate lobes. The leaves and stems are dark green, a shade that enhances the color of the flowers.

To promote flowering and extend the flowering period, take care to remove faded flowers. Even better, regularly create attractive colorful bouquets by combining various varieties. The tall stature of this variety makes it suitable for the back of perennial borders, where it pairs well with pink, deep purple, and purple. The flowering of Echinaceas is perfect when accompanied by Dahlias and also by perennial salvias, for example. Also consider grasses, which have a very beautiful effect in autumn.

As the star plant of cottage gardens, Dahlias are undoubtedly beautiful flowers, they are impeccable in flower beds but can also enhance the vegetable garden. In Mexico, this tuber was initially cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. Its poor taste qualities quickly assigned it the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

Sow in February-March, in seed trays or pots in a special seed compost that you place in a mini-greenhouse or warm place, to maintain a temperature of 18 to 20°C. The seeds will be buried under 1.5 mm (0.1 in) of fine compost. Germination will occur after 7 to 21 days.

Transplant the young plants into pots of 8 cm when they are sufficiently large to be transplanted, taking care not to damage the roots. Gradually harden these seedlings and transplant them when the risk of frost is eliminated, spacing them 30 cm (11.8 in) apart.

Plant Dahlias in full sun as soon as the last frost has passed, rich, fresh and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. At the end of planting, water once abundantly and then renew this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to aid in rooting.

Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts blacken the foliage, it is time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry, so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm (3.9 in). Spread your bulbs in a box on newspaper. Store them frost-free in a dry, cool and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In regions in the South, close to the coast, experiencing only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.
