Description

These small, evergreen, understorey shrubs or deciduous perennials owe their name to the lightness of their flowers. These very beautiful shade plants can be cultivated in borders or in a large shady rockery, preferably along a path to fully enjoy their great beauty. They can all withstand temperatures as low as  -13°C (8.6°F) without any protection. The highly cold-resistant western species can tolerate difficult conditions, such as living in dense shade under trees, in very dry soil or in moist clay soil.  The Asian species prefer soil that remains damp to moist in summer, well-drained, rich in humus, without limestone, and can also tolerate dense shade. They all grow relatively slowly, but can live for many years in one place without any special care.

A very pretty hybrid with slower growth than others, suitable for a small garden. Small deciduous, ovate, asymmetrical leaves, of a beautiful pale green that stands out brightly in the shade.  Leaves appear as if they are suspended in the air, due to the thin petioles that bear them. It is the easiest dwarf species to cultivate.  Pink-violet flowers.

Planting and care

Plant Epimedium × youngianum ‘Roseum’ in spring or early autumn, in loose, humus-rich, well-worked soil that remains somewhat moist without being waterlogged. This small perennial thrives in partial shade or dappled shade, particularly beneath deciduous shrubs where it benefits from spring light. Water regularly during the first few months, then only during dry periods, as once established, it tolerates brief dry spells quite well. Maintenance is simple: at the end of winter, remove damaged or faded leaves before the new shoots and flower stems appear, to better showcase the flowering.
Every two or three years, an application of leaf mould or well-rotted compost will be enough to maintain beautiful foliage.
