Heucheras are charming perennials with decorative foliage, available in a wide palette of colours according to varieties. Their leaves can be lime‑green, yellow, dark green, purple, red, orange, variegated... Heucheras are ideal for bringing colour to shady corners of the garden. In summer they also produce a pretty, airy flowering, white, pink or red, very delicate. They can be planted at the front of a border, on an edge, in a rockery, but also in a pot. In addition, they are very easy to propagate, by propagation by cuttings or by division of clumps: in this tutorial we give all our tips to help you succeed

By propagation by cuttings

When to propagate heucheras?

Propagation by cuttings of heucheras is best carried out in autumn or early winter.

How to propagate them?

  • Prepare pots by filling them with light, free‑draining potting compost, for example seed and cutting compost
  • Press the compost down lightly and water it
  • Choose one or more well‑developed plants, several years old and that have produced stems
Propagate heucheras by propagation by cuttings of rosettes
Prepare a pot with potting compost, take a heuchera rosette and remove the leaves from the base
  • Select healthy, sturdy stems, at least 5–6 centimetres long, cutting them at the base. Make sure they show no sign of disease.
  • Remove old leaves at the base, keeping only a few young ones at the top of the cutting.
  • Make small holes in the substrate with a pencil or stick, then insert the cuttings.
  • Press the compost down lightly around each cutting to ensure good contact between substrate and stem.
  • Place your cuttings under cover, in a bright spot but out of direct sunlight
  • Continue to water regularly to prevent the substrate drying out
  • In spring you can plant the cuttings in their final position

It is also possible to pot up the cuttings directly into the ground rather than into pots.

By division

When to divide heucheras?

Ideal time to divide heucheras is in autumn, around October. We recommend dividing them every three to four years. This regenerates the clumps and prevents them from becoming exhausted.

How to divide them?

  • Choose a well‑developed heuchera clump, in place for several years.
  • Lift it carefully, digging wide enough not to damage the roots.
  • Clean the clump by removing dead or damaged leaves
  • Use a sharp knife to divide the clump into several sections, ensuring each retains enough roots.
  • Prepare pots by filling them with potting compost.
  • Plant each new plant, planting them slightly deep.
  • Backfill with a little soil around each one, then press down lightly.
  • Water thoroughly.
  • Place the pots under cover, in a bright spot but out of direct sunlight.
  • You can plant them out in the ground in spring.
