7 yellow flowered tulips
Our selection of the most beautiful yellow varieties
Contents
Whether sparkling or tender, from the beginning of spring, yellow tulips brighten up any display. From pale yellow to buttery or vanilla shades, from canary yellow to lemon, they radiate the garden in all the hues of the sun, sometimes soft, tangy, or even spicy. They allow for cheerful, bright combinations, whether simple or eccentric. Following the crocuses and daffodils, they enliven spring borders, enchant rockeries, flower beds, vases, as well as pots and planters on your terrace, balcony, or indoors. You can temper their sunny hue by pairing them with very fresh blue and white tones, or conversely, darker shades for more contemporary contrasts or very exotic combinations. Tulips are easy-to-grow bulbs that are not demanding. They are planted in autumn, in sunny spots and in well-draining soil as they dislike standing water.

Triumph Tulip 'World Friendship'
This iconic French variety, born in 1988, blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in April, depending on the climate. Characteristic of Triumph tulips, ‘World Friendship’ produces large, narrowly cup-shaped flowers suspended on short, sturdy stems reaching 35 cm in height. They are beautifully formed with six waxy petals. Delicate and refined, this variety displays a creamy primrose yellow, very pure and bright, washed with light lemon yellow reflections. It is a tulip particularly well suited to cool, humid summers, as its bulb withstands the elements well. It proves reliable by returning each year. Plant it at the heart of large beds and borders, either alone or alongside the blue flowers of forget-me-nots, campanulas, and muscaris, or beautiful varieties of white tulips (‘White Dream’).

Viridiflora tulips: the most popularTulip 'Verona'
Unlike the previous dentate variety, the ‘Tulipa Verona’ flowers in April, at the height of the tulip season. Very double, it resembles the roundness of peony flowers. It opens into a large, well-formed cup measuring 8 cm across, composed of multiple cream-yellow petals with white streaks on the inside. This pastel-hued tulip emerges from broad, bluish foliage and exudes a fresh spring fragrance. Its short, sturdy stem of 35 cm provides good resistance to the elements and a lovely vase life. It is among the most commonly used varieties for cut flowers. It will enliven both borders and fresh bouquets. This early tulip is easy to pair with other spring-flowering bulbs like hyacinths or with Primula vulgaris. For a romantic combination, consider white Bleeding Hearts.

Tulip 'Freeman'
Another wonderfully opulent form! This is a rather late variety that blooms in April-May, during the latter part of the tulip season. With its fully double petals, it resembles a sumptuous peony flower. The Double Late Tulip ‘Freeman’ boasts a rare, variegated colour, full of contrasts, both soft and warm. It produces voluptuous and crumpled flowers in salmon-ochre tones touched with a hint of pink and green on the outside of the corolla. The petals are edged in golden yellow. Its sturdy stem is not very tall (35-40 cm) and withstands bad weather. It will bring unrestrained whimsy in pots or borders, alongside roses in similar shades for a harmonious colour scheme or with an Fritillaria persica ‘Adiyaman’, a form of Persian Fritillary with almost black flowers, and grasses like Melica altissima ‘Atropurpurea’, for a more baroque composition.

The botanical tulip clusiana 'Cynthia'
Change your silhouette with this graceful botanical tulip! In March-April, ‘Cynthia’ offers a magnificent single flower. Each tulip opens wide under the sun, forming a star shape, revealing a delicate bicoloured flowering in pale yellow striped with dark pink on the outside of the corolla. It is supported by a slender stem 25 to 30 cm tall. Like all botanical tulips, it reappears vigorously each year without requiring maintenance and naturalises easily in mild climates. Graceful, it creates fresh spring scenes imbued with simplicity. Plant it in borders, rockeries, at the foot of trees or bushes, or in masses in a lawn for an even more natural effect. It pairs easily with small spring bulbs like Crocus or early-flowering daffodils ‘Tête à tête’.

Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Jaap Groot'
‘Jaap Groot’ is a delightful hybrid version of the very popular tulip ‘Golden Apeldoorn’, universally appreciated for its large pure yellow flowers with silver highlights. It blooms at the heart of the tulip season, in April-May. Just as early, durable, and reliable as its predecessor, ‘Jaap Groot’ encompasses all the qualities of this new line of Darwin hybrids. It stands out with its superb bicoloured flower skillfully blending fresh tones. Sculptural and radiant, it reaches a height of 45 to 55 cm, with large elongated flowers measuring 10 cm. They open in a rare fresh colour of creamy-ivory white, flamed with golden yellow at the base, on a very pretty green-blue foliage margined with white. The inside of the corolla reveals a bright yellow heart speckled with black, reminiscent of a fried egg. Each flower lasts several days before fading. It is a splendid tulip in borders, exceptional in bouquets, bringing freshness and exoticism. For a simple and fresh display, pair it with daffodils, Tulipa viridiflora, other Darwin hybrid tulips like ‘Ivory Floradale’, and some perennials with tangy flowering such as alchemilla, for example.
