Description

The variety 'Night Butterfly' is a collarette-type dahlia offering a very bold colour play: petals of a burgundy-purple, surrounding a pinkish-white collarette, all centred on a yellow heart. With abundant and prolonged flowering, this variety will make a big impact in summer and autumn scenes. In a border or a large planter, it catches the eye and attracts pollinators. Its flowers allow for the creation of contemporary-style cut flower arrangements.

The genus Dahlia belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to Mexico and Central America, where species are found that have been widely hybridised since the beginning of the 19th century. These plants are perennial through their tubercles, but are frost-sensitive.
The Dahlia 'Night Butterfly' belongs to the horticultural group of collarette dahlias; their heads (or "flowers") feature an outer rank of flat ligules and a shorter inner rank of secondary ligules, circling the central disc. This variety reaches 80-90 cm in height, sometimes up to 1 m depending on the situation, with a spread of 40-50 cm. The flowers measure 7-8 cm in diameter. They feature a rank of ligules of a very dark burgundy, almost black, which surrounds a ring of white ligules with a pink base and a mustard-yellow central disc. Flowering renews itself from July to October (until the first frosts). The foliage blackens at the end of the season; the tubercles are then dug up to overwinter them dry and frost-free.

To encourage repeat flowering, be sure to regularly cut off spent flowers and make cut flower arrangements. The dahlia 'Night Butterfly' is a pretty night butterfly, dark and light, elegant in the garden as in a vase. You can place it in the middle ground of a border with the silvery-grey foliage of the artemisia Artemisia ludovicinana 'Silver Queen' or with light-coloured flowerings. It will pair wonderfully with the Dahlia 'Fashion Monger' (bright pink and white), or with the purple foliage of the Dahlia Happy Single Wink and of the Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing'.

A star plant for borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias accompany the most beautiful flowers without hesitation, but are also appreciated alongside vegetable plants. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable. But its poor gustatory qualities assigned it to the rank of ornamental plant. Since then, interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Night Butterfly' dahlias in fine weather in deeply worked soil enriched, for example, with ground horn or dried blood. Place your tubercle and crumble the soil well to fill in without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm of soil. At the end of planting, pour a litre of water. Water regularly during the first 6 weeks to aid rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold. They need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage; this is the time to lift them. Dig up the tubercles carefully. Remove as much soil as possible. Allow the foliage to dry, so the tubercle can replenish its reserves. When the foliage is dry, cut the stems to 10 cm from the tubercle. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place.
