Description

Philodendron 'Green Princess' is a compact houseplant with dark green, very glossy foliage. It forms a dense rosette rather than a long vine, perfectly suited to small spaces: shelves, coffee tables, side tables, desks, or windowsills in soft light. With its appearance of a mini tropical shrub, this pretty princess easily finds its place in a living room, bedroom, or even a bright bathroom.

Botanically, 'Green Princess' belongs to the large Araceae family and the Philodendron genus, native to the tropical forests of America. More specifically, it is a bushy cultivar derived from Philodendron erubescens, among others. Horticulturists have selected this compact form for pot cultivation; it is distributed under the names Philodendron erubescens 'Green Princess', Philodendron 'Green Princess', or sometimes 'Green Leaf'.
The plant has a bushy, dense habit, with numerous short stems emerging from the base and remaining clustered. The whole forms a rosette 30 to 50 cm in height and 30 to 40 cm in width at maturity. The thick and leathery leaves are ovate or slightly heart-shaped, finely pointed at their tip. They generally measure 10 to 15 cm in length but can become larger under very good conditions. Their glossy, dark green upper surface is crossed by a lighter central vein.
The plant can theoretically produce spathe-like inflorescences, but flowering is very rare indoors and not very decorative.
Like all philodendrons, this cultivar is toxic if ingested. Therefore, it should be kept out of reach of young children and animals that nibble on plants.

Indoors, give it filtered or medium-intensity light, without scorching sun, fairly high air humidity, around 50 to 70%, and temperatures between 18 and 26°C. Generally easy for beginners, this "philo" forgives minor oversights as long as the air is not too dry and its roots are not waterlogged; it then thrives in a bright living room, office, bedroom, or heated bathroom.

To create a beautiful plant display around Philodendron 'Green Princess', play on differences in texture while staying within the same tropical understory atmosphere. On a low piece of furniture or a wide shelf, pair it, for example, with a Philodendron 'White Princess', with foliage variegated with white, and a Calathea orbifolia with large, round, striped leaves. In a living room or bathroom, you can also pair it with a Philodendron 'Sunlight', with golden highlights, and a Spathiphyllum 'Tanni', with elegant white flowers: together, these plants compose a small, lush indoor garden without taking up too much space.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the top of the compost feels dry to the touch. Use non-calcareous water at room temperature. In winter, reduce watering frequency. Mist frequently during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. Use a slightly larger pot.
Use a well-draining, rich and aerated compost. A mix of houseplant compost, coconut fibre and perlite, with clay pebbles at the bottom for drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) twice a month in spring and summer. Reduce feeding in autumn and stop it in winter.

Houseplant care

Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and promote photosynthesis.
Easy to grow with a little attention. Remove dry or yellowed leaves. You can shorten overly long stems and remove weak branches to maintain a lovely, compact shape.

Disease and pest advice

A generally robust plant, particularly sensitive to cultivation errors (air too dry, excess water) and common indoor pests. Keep a special watch for scale insects and mites in dry conditions. In case of infestation, isolate the plant, give the foliage a lukewarm shower, then wipe the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water (black soap), repeating several times.
