Description

The Philodendron squamiferum x serpens, sometimes nicknamed the "Hairy Philodendron", is a rare hybrid that is unlike anything known in the world of "philos". Its large, lobed leaves, in a deep, glossy green, are borne on petioles covered in red hairs. To succeed in growing it and see it thrive year after year, place it in a room with bright light, without direct sunlight, and maintain adequate ambient humidity.

The Philodendron squamiferum x serpens is a plant of the Araceae family. It is a horticultural hybrid resulting from a cross between two botanical species: Philodendron squamiferum and P. serpens. The former is a climbing plant native to the tropical forests of Central America, known for its lobed leaves and red petioles covered in hairs. P. serpens, on the other hand, is native to tropical regions of South America, and is distinguished by its heart-shaped, velvety, and thick leaves. This hybrid is a fast-growing climbing plant, reaching up to 2 m in height indoors, or even more in optimal conditions. Its deeply lobed, elongated heart-shaped leaves, measure up to 50 cm in length and are deep green and glossy. The petioles are covered in red hairs. Flowering indoors is rare and discreet. An interesting feature of this plant: it produces nectar outside the flower, visible as small translucent beads on the petioles or on the back of the leaves. Like many philodendrons, this plant is toxic if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals.

With its elegant climbing habit and generous size, the Philodendron squamiferum x serpens fits into a spacious and bright interior. Place it in a living room, conservatory, or office near a window, letting it climb on a wooden stake or decorative ladder. Its beautiful foliage brings an exotic and contemporary touch, perfect for an urban jungle or minimalist style. In a large, well-lit bathroom, it will benefit from natural humidity that recalls its tropical habitat.
To accompany it, consider Monstera adansonii, with its finely cut leaves. Philodendron gloriosum, with its large, velvety, heart-shaped foliage, will accentuate the sophisticated and luxurious feel. And to add a graphic touch with lightness, choose Epipremnum pinnatum 'Cebu Blue' with its blue-silver sheen.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the top 2-3 cm of substrate is dry. Mist regularly to maintain high humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot preferably in spring, every 2 to 3 years, or when the roots start to protrude from the pot. Use a slightly larger pot.
Use a free-draining potting compost enriched with organic matter, a light mix with clay pebbles for good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 3-1-2) every two weeks during the growth period (spring-summer). Reduce the frequency in autumn-winter.

Houseplant care

Wipe its leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Pruning is generally not necessary. Remove dead or yellow leaves to encourage the growth of new shoots. Pinching the tips of stems can encourage branching.

Disease and pest advice

If scale insects appear, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water or 70% alcohol. For root rot, reduce watering.
