Description

The Hydrangea macrophylla × serrata Black Velvet® ‘Darbi’ is a hydrangea characterised by its very dark foliage and white flower heads edged with red. It is a compact, very hardy and remarkably colourful variety. It is suitable for partially shaded borders, woodland edges and container cultivation. A reliable choice for brightening up the less sunny areas of the garden!

Belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, Black Velvet® ‘Darbi’ is a hybrid between Hydrangea macrophylla (bigleaf hydrangea) and H. serrata (mountain hydrangea), two species native to Japan.
‘Darbi’ is a recent selection with naturally very dark foliage, rich in anthocyanins, which retains its colour even in shaded situations. It is distributed in Europe by the SAPHO group and marketed under the trade name Choco Black Velvet. It is a deciduous bush, bushy in habit with a rounded, densely branched form, reaching 80 cm to 1.20 m in height and spread. In a wide and deep pot, expect 60 to 80 cm in all directions. Its stems are upright, purplish-brown on young shoots. They become brown to greyish with age. Its deciduous leaves, ovate to broadly elliptical with dentate margins, measure 8 to 15 cm long. The foliage is a dark green strongly tinged with purple to black depending on the light, then it takes on reddish tones at the end of the season. The flowering period, from June to September, features globular inflorescences 12 to 18 cm in diameter; the sterile peripheral florets bear white sepals edged with crimson red, the border widening and the whole gradually turning to a coppery red at the end of flowering. The small central fertile flowers are discreet.
As with many hydrangeas, the flower colour can vary slightly depending on the soil pH and alumina availability, but the red border remains a characteristic trait. The hardiness of this variety is estimated at −23 °C.

The Hydrangea Black Velvet Darbi fascinates with the richness and depth of its colours. Its combination with white varieties like Shooting Star is particularly successful, the colours complementing each other. It will thrive in a non-scorching east or west-facing exposure, in borders as well as in small hedges. This variety is well-suited to container cultivation, to be placed on the patio in a beautiful pot, or near the entrance. Pair it also with woody fuchsias, with impatiens and Sunpatiens annuals, plant daffodils and double tulips in front of its rounded silhouette. Enjoy its sumptuous flowering for a long time in the garden or in the house.

Planting and care

Plant the Hydrangea Balck Velvet Darbi in spring or early autumn, preferably in a lightly shaded position, for example against an east-facing wall, or even a north-facing one. Shelter it from cold, drying winds. It does not require heather soil, but appreciates a deep, cool, yet well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good base fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the foot of the wall, position the root ball at least 30-40 cm from the base of the wall and incorporate plenty of well-rotted compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, it is not afraid of being planted in cold regions.
