So, subsidiary question: what's the point of keeping a plant in the catalog that hasn't been available for months and months, and presumably will never be available again? ????????????

Description

Compact bush with slow growth, Camellia sasanqua Interlude is a variety with double, mauve pink flowers.

This variety blooms from October without halt until December. It forms a compact bush 80cm (32 in) in height and the same in width. It produces large 6cm (2.4 in) diameter flowers, very double, mauve pink, resembling old roses.

The elliptical leaves of this camellia are dark green, measuring 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) in length and are evergreen. Hardy down to -12C°, this variety is grown in partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. It likes acidic, humus-rich, moist and light soils.

Plant Camellia sasanqua Interlude in a bed of ericaceous soil along with azaleas, skimmia, Pieris and heathers. Its compact size allows for pot cultivation; place it on a semi-shaded terrace and bring the pot indoors as soon as the cold sets in, to enjoy the blooms for a longer time.

Planting and care

Camellia sasanqua can be placed in a fairly shady location sheltered from cold and drying winds. It can be grown in full sun but the roots need to remain cool. Plant it in a cool, humus-bearing, acidic and well-drained soil. Do not plant the bush too deeply; the top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1.2 in) of soil. In winter cover it with a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) thick mulch composed of leaf compost and crushed bark. Beware of late frosts that can damage the flowers and buds. Water during dry periods to prevent the bush dropping its flower buds.
